The Velvet Underground frequently used Macs to make their experimental sounds. For example, the electric viola parts were not played by John Cale, but rather made on a Mac.

I've got a mac and a PC. Considering most of what I do is browser-based, and both have Chrome, not much else matters to me. I game on my PC and do music and art-related stuff on my mac. Which is better? My PC, cause it doesn't cost TWO THOUSAND FUCKING DOLLARS.

You've just proven how OK Computer can be overrated...even while I don't disagree with you about Nevermind.

To be honest, I've owned it for about 12 years now and I only care for half the album. To me that's not a great album by any stretch.

In 2011 he's going to release an album called "GREAT Computer" which will be edited on Windows or Linux machine 😉

I hope you aren't being too serious here... Macs and PCs are good for different purposes. But when it comes to stuff like this, it doesn't even matter what operating system you choose. Douglas Adams wrote novels on a Mac, that doesn't mean Apple computers are superior for novel writing. It just means it was the mid 90s.

I think generally, the more proficient with computers you are (rather than a specific program), the more you desire the support PCs have, or the freeware Linux offers. But if you only use computers for simple tasks (a few editing programs you're used to, plus email) then you won't know what you're missing. I heard Macs are decent for programming too, though I don't know why.

Macs were around even in 1997?

They've been around since the 80s, if I recall. When Apple felt the company name on the product was getting old after the Apple IIe or thereabouts.

But if you wanted serious computing back then you had a Commodore/Amiga...regrettably, all I had was an IBM PCjr. Obsolete the instant it was made. And I got mine 5 years later 🤣

Anyway, my Intro to Electronic Music professor did say that Macs were better platforms for producing music and that's all we had in the music lab (along with some awesome MIDI keyboards). But that was actually right around the time OK Computer was released. It's been 13 years, so I don't know if it still holds true - Windows has made substantial leaps forward since Windows98.

That said, I used mostly Macs my first two years of college (in their computer labs) and got sick and tired of having the damn things freeze on me and having to unplug the damned things to restart them because they didn't have power or even reset buttons. Lost a lot of work that way even with autosave features. PCs may crash a lot (actually, mine don't), but I've found most crashes don't occur when you're using software that doesn't really tax your computer's systems.

(Facepalm)

Here are some quotes from Wikipedia:

"Airbag", the album's opening track, was inspired by DJ Shadow and features an electronic drum beat programmed from a seconds-long recording of Selway drumming. The band sampled the drum track with an Akai S3000XL, edited it using a Macintosh computer,"

"Fitter Happier", which begins the second half of the album, consists of sampled musical and background sound and lyrics recited by a synthesized voice from the Macintosh SimpleText application.

And the whole thing was mixed and stuff with Pro Tools on a Mac.

The point is, if Thom really made the best album of all time with this thing, you should get one, too 😜 . It's a shame I had to ruin the joke like that.

Though Squishy's joke wasn't bad either.

Edit: On a random note, it should be pointed out that Trent Reznor also uses a Mac obsessively, which means you should definitely get it.
