There were other non-Beefheart Beefheart albums too, though, and anyway, Big Eyed Beans from Venus at least is an essential Beefheart song. Overall, though, Clear Spot is inferior to some of his other albums.

Not a terrible list; I think two selections from Clear Spot is the strangest part. If we're talking capital E Essential, like in as for a non DVV fan, then I would have just added Abba Zabba. I'll admit that I don't know a lot of Beefheart besides the two biggies (TMR, SaM) and perhaps it shows that I'm a bigger fan of his more bluesy stuff, but goddammit, Dachau Blues is the tits!

Also, I don't think it was the opener, but Captain Beefheart DOES provide the only vocals anywhere on Hot Rats in the song "Willie the Pimp" and it IIISSS a scorcher!

My personal favorite has always been "Veteran's Day Poppy". Very tough, I don't think Beefheart's material was meant to be taken in pinches so to speak.
