Only Outkast and Kanye West are underrated. The rest is fine IMO.

I couldn't answer that question. I don't know of any under rated rap albums, the beastie boy albums I've heard are good, Kid Rock is good as well. I think Jay-Z and Outkast are over rated...every time their music comes up in random play I'm nearly deleting them. The albums almost feel driven by good singles.

So you don't think hip-hop and electronic artists preform their music in the studio? I can tell you, once again, that you are flatly mistaken.

The Poe wrote:

I never said that hip hop, electronic, are any non-traditional form of music wasn't "real" to me. I gave one hypothetical type of hip hop that would lay the foundation for a type of sound I might like, one that that included "performed" instruments. Actually, I don't think I even used the word "real" in any of my posts in this thread.

yes... i guess that was 40footwolf..

The Poe wrote:

The thing about performance is, it needs to be practiced to be perfected. And during that process, not only is the ability to play each song perfected, but the song itself. During the process of practicing a song, it becomes more clear what works in the songwriting and what doesn't, especially with all of the subtle differences that separate the ordinary from the extraordinary. The process is usually missed with entirely computerized music.

Again, i think the process as you describe, practicing a song multiple times reveals what works and what doesn't, is about the same, but more insular since a lot of hip-hop tracks and electronic songs created on a computer are often produced by one person. It takes a lot of practice to hit the right notes, meld separate tracks together, blend sounds, etc. on a computer.

In another post somewhere today i actually state that it's incredibly laborious just to perfect one song (in either genre).

Tell me how much easier it is than playing a drum kit, or playing a guitar.

The easiest part of my recordings is the actual recording. It's all improvised sax. Takes me about an hour to get 20/30 minutes of useable material.

The spend hours getting the mixing, mastering & panning done alone. Creating the atmospheres, drums, and other such effects on my current project is what's taking up the most time. To make something interesting sounding, and to make it so it's not the same 4 bars on repeat, is VERY difficult, and extremely frustrating at times. It takes a lot more skill than you think.

The crap Skrillex makes is like...3 buttons away though 😨

Part of my point was actually backing up that hip-hop or electronic music takes just as much skill as "traditional" music. In another post somewhere today i actually state that it's incredibly laborious just to perfect one song (in either genre). I think it takes a ton of skill, whether it's "traditional" music or new forms (cheeky reference to roni size).

Anyway, i agreed with you before you disagreed with me...or something. 😄

They can do wonders for music. But thus far, I've seen it used better to color the overall sound of a song rather than be it's center piece. NOT that it cannot be used as the main core of a song, it just doesn't generally have as much ingenuity as the use of instruments.

If you've ever tried making music with a computer? You would know that this is really, really not the case. I have a friend in a hip-hop group that's gaining a lot of traction pretty rapidly and he spends sometimes TWELVE HOURS A DAY in the recording studio making beats, brainstorming with the other group members, figuring out what works and what doesn't. Those last two parts are not specific to rock, that is just how you make MUSIC, period, whether you're making it with guitars or sequencers or severed hippo buttcheeks.

But to make a separate point about hip-hop music not being "real" music because it doesn't use any "real" instruments..

The history of rap/hip-hop is mostly antithetical to instrumentation. Rap grew up on neighborhood streets, kids beat-boxing in their hands while friends rapped out lyrics, later with record-scratching accompaniment. Rap sort of harkens back to music's roots, before instrumentation of any kind, of a Capella singing.

And what are "real" instruments? During the big band era, adults scoffed at that new-fangled guitar. That's not a real instrument! People belittled the synthesizer when that gained traction in (pop) music. I think scratching via a record player, song samples via record player or computer, or using the computer to "construct" music (a la avalanches & girl talk) is just as viable of an "instrument". These methods just don't meet your (and a lot of other peoples') definition of "traditional" music or traditional musicianship. That's been the case across decades of pop music now.

Anyway, you admit the artificiality of "real" instruments and music by putting "real" in quotes. The definition of real instruments and music evolves with each new wave of kids discovering and creating music for themselves. In the end, it really all comes down to personal preference, as is the case with any subjective, artistic form of expression.

the last 2 roots albums placed in my top 15 of each respective year. They consistently put out very good hip-hop.
I don't think I've heard of them. Just tried the song "The Seed 2.0". I suppose I could put a check mark next to "use of instruments", although I hate to put a criteria to what music ought to be.

The song is about as average as the video I posted, although it's far better than your average hip hop. There's an actual feel to the song but it suffers from that overused song structure. I'll give the "Things Fall Apart" album a try.
