Interesting discussion. I am a fan of heavy rock so I am definitely a Sabbath fan (especially the Dio era) but I know plenty of people who don't care for them (no disrespect to one of the users) and plenty who do like them. Unless you are a fan of metal, you probably aren't going to like them and with their slow, plodding songs I don't imagine they are going to have a lot of casual fans. That is not a putdown to them at all and they have had some success but Sabbath were never massively, massively huge with only a few bonafide hits.

Surprisingly to me, I've never met anyone who dislikes Sufjan Stevens. I imagined him to be quite hate-able, considering his emotional wetness, long song names and inclusion of religious thought in his songs, however I've never come across a reaction more negative than general disinterest. I'm sure there are such people though, and I'm just not hanging out in those circles. If not, perhaps he's just hate-able in theory?

Probably a band like Cheap Trick. They have a ton of good songs that are listenable regardless of what kind of mood you are in. They aren't one of my favorite bands as a whole, but it is hard to find much fault with their body of work.

I don't mean to "stir it up" in here 😲 but I know plenty of people that truly despise Bob Marley. Some of them hate reggae music in general and group him in with that, and his other haters love reggae... you have to keep in mind, for real reggae fans, Bob Marley is like the equivalent of the Beatles. I know many of you might not have met a reggae snob, but they exist, and a lot of them roll their eyes at any mention of the mon.

Also, in Moosboy101's defense, I think he was trying to say no one should hate Black Sabbath....which is as true of a statement as I've ever heard. People do, of course hate them, but people also hate rock n roll, being awesome, and life.

So far I have to agree with the Bob Marley pick. I can't think of anyone who hates him, or anyone who thinks it's trendy to hate him. He's pretty safe.

@mooseboy101 I'm still shocked you don't know even one person who hates black sabbath. Surely there's a die hard Iron Maiden, Judas Priest or Metallica fan you know that has no time for them?

Personally, the only artist listed so far that I think could fit the bill is Bob Marley, mostly because he has become 'like Che.' A band that's hard to hate has to be pretty good, cannot have an overly rabid fanbase to transfer hate from, and can't be cookie-cutter or overly experimental.

I haven't ran into anyone who really hates New Order (many hate Joy Division though); it's hard to deny the band that made Blue Monday, Bizarre Love Triangle, and Thieves Like Us, among other feel good, yet knowing dance songs. Alot of people are turned off a little by their usually long intros though.

Everyone I've ever put on the Avalanches for thoroughly enjoys them too, as well as the Strokes' first album. Wilco is usually really loved too. As for the Pixies, Doolittle is accessible for everyone and most like it, but their other stuff usually turns people off minus some songs here and there (e.g. Where is My Mind?), people really hate yelling for some reason.

Yeah you're right, I see your point. But maybe they're cutesy enough that hate towards them would just fizzle out. To me hating the Flaming Lips would be like hating a unicorn, or a small child.

Hard to say though. But yeah I absolutely see your point.

I don't know. The Flaming Lips are weird and eccentric, and I think one could interpret their weirdness and imaginativeness as precious or cutesy, or even pretentious, so I could totally see how someone could hate The Flaming Lips. I'm not in that camp, but I could understand that point of view.

What about Tom Petty? I've always kind of thought of him as sort of the meat and potatoes of rock n roll. Now, some of his hardcore fans are easy to hate for their mostly insipid taste and general lack of musical knowledge, but I have seen Tom Petty and Heartbreakers Greatest Hits in a broad cross-culture of music fans' collections, including my own. Also, Tom Petty, himself has always seemed kind of cool to me.

Also, I totally agree with Bob Marley and Johnny Cash. Almost everybody likes those guys.

While I don't hate Bob Marley, I hate what he's been turned into. He's like the Che of music, he's an image who would despise the fact that he's been turned into a tool of capitalism. Most people I know who are hardcore Bob Marley fans are frat boy douchebags who don''t own another reggae album other than Legend...I don't know many people who hate Mississippi John Hurt, or Ya La Tengo

I used to hate johnny cash when I was younger but I was a bit ignorant and didnt really know what I was talking about. And since listening to his version of Hurt, I dont think I could say a bad thing about him ever again.

Aretha Franklin I really dont know much about, So I cant say I hate her, But Solo artists are usually loved or hated anyway ie (Hendrix/Kevin Federline)
