Ah, love this one. Wouldn't say there's any filler, but it does suffer a bit from its length; I've only listened to it about fifteen times all the way through, and usually just listen to two discs at a time. My favorite songs are "Good Intentions Paving Company", "Baby Birch," and "In California" and those three songs would probably be in my top five Newsom songs. I think each subsequent disc is slightly weaker than the previous one, though I wouldn't say the third is weak by any means. I've also always felt each disc is structured to have two particularly strong songs, those being: "Good Intentions Paving Company" and Baby Birch" on disc one; "In California" and "Jackrabbits" on disc two; and "Soft as Chalk" and "Kingfisher" on disc three. Though I don't think any song on this album reaches the lyrical heights of "Monkey and Bear" or "Only Skin," this album fits my taste musically moreso than Ys, I think it conveys an atmosphere reminiscent of one created by Jane Austen or the Bronte sisters moreso then her others (which has always been present in her music for me), and I think it's a continued maturation of the best lyricist since the '70s. I've been too focused on '90s alternative and music from the past three years to have listened to Newsom recently though; I'll have to remedy that soon.

lethalnezzle wrote:

the transition from Ys to this is reminiscent of Joni's travels into fuller, jazzier waters

Agreed. As a side note, Joni always said that Pastorius was the only bassist she wanted to play with.

I think the running time of this album is what hurts it in comparison to her first 2. This could have easily been 2 albums. But at this length it becomes really hard to take it all in in one sitting.

Lethal, it may appear lazy, but your comparison to Joni's transition to jazzier waters is pretty spot on

In my eyes this is Newsom's best work, and one of my favourite all time albums. If Ys is a fairytale, then this is a novel - it feels so much more down to earth, thoughtfully constructed and, because of that, more poignant than her other work. Every song feels like it builds on what the last had provided, I'm in awe of how a person could write nearly 2 flawless hours of music and have it all feel like it's part of one greater picture.

I'm actually really excited to hear it again, I'll listen to it tomorrow.

I actually agree with this except for the fact that I wouldn't call it a disappointment and I don't think it is better than Milk Eyed Mender (they're tied). I think her magic was most apparent in Ys, and on Milk Eyed Mender and this it was just amazing music, not transcendentally omg wow music like Ys.

It's, at the very least, the best album of the last ten years. By one of the greatest singers of the 21st century, yes I'm quite a big fan.

It's the laziest fucking comparison ever, but the transition from Ys to this is reminiscent of Joni's travels into fuller, jazzier waters. Anyway, this is pretty dope. I still think she's overrated on t'internet, but her albums are uniformly great.

It's really good, but I much, much, much prefer her previous two albums. I just feel she lost her magic on this one, and instead just made a classy, solid record. As much as I like it, I'd call it a disappointment.
