UPDATE: Somehow I forgot Tim Buckley when I originally posted. So actually Buckley probably topped The Velvet Underground's run with Blue Afternoon (1969) --> Lorca (1970) --> Starsailor (1970) ... I'd rank Lorca slightly below Velvet Underground and Nico, and Starsailor slightly below White Light/White Heat, but Blue Afternoon a good margin above Velvet Underground's self-tltled third album, so overall I'd probably give him the edge.

Beyond the obvious ones (Beatles, Floyd, Radiohead, Bowie, etc.) which clearly are the best three album runs, I think Nine Inch Nails warrants a mention. I don't think I saw anyone mention Trent's first three LPs, which to me is a shame, as Pretty Hate Machine, Downward Spiral, and The Fragile are three of my favourite albums. Maybe this one doesn't count because of Broken, but I don't think an EP should count for breaking up something like this. If Broken does count, then maybe Downward Spiral though With Teeth, which is admittedly weaker than starting at PHM, but still an incredible run of albums.

Uncle Tupelo's Still Feel Gone / March 16-20, 1992 / Anodyne is a fantastic three-album run. If you want to make it a four-album run, you could add their debut, No Depression, which many might think is their best.
