I love TV On The Radio but I don't really see them as math rock at all. Polvo is the first thing I think of when I hear math rock, and I know The Dismemberment Plan is considered math rock by a lot of people, but to be honest math rock is one of the genre categorizations I'm shakiest on. I don't know when something is complex time wise enough to be considered math rock, and does it have to have the post-hardcore influence or can it just be any shit with super complex time signatures in an indie-ish context? I'm not sure.

Even then, I think a good majority of Tv On The Radio's songs are in pretty traditional time signatures, so despite my shaky feelings towards the classification I wouldn't but them there.

No, not only. It's part of a bigger movement that tries to re-create a hard style of rock in a new kind of sound, and in a new way of thinking.

It's a genre based on rhythmic experimentation (all kinds). Above this base, there are melodies: those sound pretty punk, and are made by the voice, by guitars, or by other instruments.
The feelings, the atmospheres, the abundance of sounds: these can be very various, depending on the band and album.

(I still think the best way to get it is to listen to something) 😜

Always seemed like a dumb dumb name for a genre. But really I find most names as silly in and of themselves. Just the names as is, not the genres cuz I like genres I like understanding divisions and subdivisions of style. But the names under further inspection are just kinda silly sounding especially when you first hear of them and you have a total misunderstood on the name. The first time I heard "shoegaze" I chuckled. Same for "twee pop" or "Post Rock" (actually no chuckling for that one, I was just really friggin confused.). Names such as "Math Rock", "Krautrock", "Drone", "Grindcore" still seem strange. But they do describe the music somewhat in some cases.

Usually in indie rock/alternative rock soundscapes as well. Less from the progressive rock school of thought and more the punk school.
