I want to leave a few comments about the '40s and '50s, since they have been flying under the radar so far. In the US, the pop of the '40s and early '50s sounded almost like it came from a different world. It was dominated by swing and big band music, as well as the watered-down derivatives (Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Tony Bennett, etc.). The Delta blues, while relevant in some circles, weren't yet the underpinning of most pop, so the radio would have had a much jazzier flavor than it does today.

Perhaps most important of all, however, was the fact that "pop" music was not yet being made for teenagers. Rather, record companies were targeting primarily young adults. It wasn't until artists like Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley really demonstrated the power of the teen market that the industry began to shift into the mode we see today.

The mid-50s to early '60s, however, should be very accessible to modern listeners, with rock, soul, and R&B already starting to make a big impact. The key difference between this era and everything that followed was that it was completely unpretentious -- for the most part, pop musicians didn't see themselves as artists. They were just making fun music for the masses. I actually prefer this era to the '70s, and perhaps the 2000s as well (though I don't know much about pop music post-2000).

80's because of all that lovely synth goodness. 60's is a close second, largely because of soul/Motown.

I voted 2010s without reading that he meant top 40 stuff. Charli XCX and Sky Ferreira and Grimes are super popular and yet they're not on top 40 stations as far as I know...they might be though, don't really listen to the radio very often. I like Ellie Goulding, and Beyonce's new stuff, and Lorde...

I think I'm having the most problem with this because of the top 40 constrictions. I don't even know what the top 40 looks like...lemme see what it is right now.
Hm, well it has Beyonce. Don't like Avicii, had to listen to a CD of that in the car yesterday. The Antony and the Johnsons cover wasn't as bad as I thought it would be at first but then they just fucked it up, lol.

It is weird that although there is a stereotypical 80s synthpop sound in my head which is really amazing, I can't ever find an 80s artist that actually sounds like it. I tend to gauge what was popular in the 80s based on whether my mom has heard of them. The 80s seemed better for pop music in the UK from what I can see, my mom hadn't even heard of Kate Bush regardless of how popular she was in the UK at the time.

90s? Eh. Nirvana got lots of airplay, didn't they? Oh, wow, Youtube's search suggestion says "Smells like Team Spirit" That means that many people put team instead of teen? 🤣 Or maybe I accidentally slipped into an alternate universe where everything is the same except for Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana being called Smells like Team Spirit.

60s had sunshine pop, which I'm excited to listen to more of. I can understand why so many people are voting for the 60s.

70s just had a bunch of blegh stadium rock and soft rock like Sp4cetiger said. Probably. Maybe. Unsure. Don't wanna listen to Billy Joel or Elton John so...

I'd have to agree with this and put the 60's and 80's in a virtual tie with the 70's close behind then the 90's. But I grew up in the 80's and that skews my view point.
I like pop music from all other decades more than the 60s.

When I think of 60s pop i think of stuff like The Monkees or The Mama's and the Papa's or The Archies. And thats not stuff I like really. The folk side (The Byrds, The Band, etc) of things doesnt do much for me save for maybe Bob Dylan or some S&G and even then I havent really listened to either in a while.

The Beatles are fine and all, but again havent listened to them in a while and havent had an urge to. THe Doors, Rolling Stones are pretty much the same way. Dont care for the Beach Boys at all.

So yeah. I like more recent pop much better.

I cannot forgive the most important decade of my life for these mistakes.

I have satellite radio in my car and have been listening to decade-devoted pop stations as I move forward chronologically in my album listening. I only just recently switched over to the '80s pop station ("80s on 8", they call it) and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

Just to give a little context, I really see myself as a child of the '90s. When I was very young, I despised the music that was frequently played on the radio, preferring instead oldies radio stations. When I transitioned to middle school and high school (mid-90s), my distaste for the '80s was amplified by the prevailing zeitgeist, which depicted the '80s as a decade of excess. Synthpop and hair metal were seen as self-indulgent and tacky. That's why it was a surprise to me when I found myself enjoying '80s pop. I still wouldn't put it above the '60s, but it may turn out to be my second favorite in the long run.

The worst? So far, the '70s. Funk and disco were interesting, but all the soft rock and stadium rock they play on the '70s station is pretty tedious.
