i started making charts in grade school because i truly heart music. nothing really has changed since i had songs memorized at age 3 except my music library size.

I became interested in lists at a young age. I remember when I was 9 when AFI made their Top 100 Movies List. I recall totally disagreeing with it, not because I had better choices, but because I was 9 and hadn't seen or heard of almost everything on it. But it got me interested in seeing more movies. I made my first list when I was 12ish on the most important thing to me at that age...video games. I made my first movie list at 13, and my first album list at 18. So when I joined BEA, all I had to do was plug it in.

People love charts, and we make charts for just about everything. But I think the reason people make their own is because nobody agrees with authorities on a given subject. Take albums for example. Nobody entirely agrees with Rolling Stone's lists, or Spin Magazine's, or Q magazine's, or VH1's, etc. So we make our own. At least that's why I started making my own.

I like and dislike lists. I like them because they're very good at introducing people to a great movie or album that they've never experienced. But I dislike them because they uplift everything that's on them, while weeding out everything that isn't. It's as though a select few works of art deserve to be on a higher pedestal, and everything else doesn't deserve recognition, which is unfair. At least BEA's overall chart is all-inclusive. So even if an album is only loved by one person, it still gets a little recognition.

Listening to albums is a hobby for me. I just wanted to take advantage of organizing a list on this website to show off to people, something I cannot do on Twitter or Facebook. No deep or profound reason. I just make charts just because my hobby is listening to music!

For reference purposes, keeping things organized, seeing reactions and comments, going to other people's charts to check out new music, etc...

i started making a list of my favorite songs on a weekly basis freshman year of high school because i thought it would be fun and i've been obsessed with music since i was 2. (indulging or not, mom said i had song lyrics memorized by age 2 or 3.) i cut that down to a yearly songs chart before entering college because i didn't think i'd have the time to keep a weekly chart up, but picked it back up a year-and-a-half into college.

I didn't think of making a weekly album chart until 1995 (first full year out of college). Again, i did so because i thought it would be fun.

And it was fun. I kept those weekly charts up until April 2010 when my last PC hard drive crashed and i discovered i didn't make a backup of the music stuff since 2003. With all of that data gone (except yearly favorites), i decided to stop doing the weekly thing. But i still keep track of my yearly favorites on an annual basis... because i find it fun.

I started when I got the Zune subscription, which was in 2007 I think. I had always listened to a lot of music, but a subscription service just took it to this whole other level. I was listening to hundreds of albums a year. So I started making lists just to keep track of what I'd hear and what I liked. In 2009, I started a mailing list with album reviews, mostly so others could benefit from the insane amount of listening I was doing. Last year was when I really got into BEA and actually rating and ranking albums.

I had pretentiously ranked many of my albums based on some perceived critical value that I thought they deserved, rather than ranking them based on my own enjoyment of the album. For example, I had ranked the Beatles White Album as an 85. Now, don't get me wrong this album is, no doubt, an excellent album. One that I adore. But, when I compare that album which I listen to, maybe, 2 or 3 times a year to an album like "The Crane Wife" by the Decemberists, which I'm still listening to, maybe, once every other month (8 years after it's release), I couldn't honestly claim that I enjoy the White Album more.

This, obviously, has become an ever-evolving and ever-changing list list for me. But, thanks to this site, I now believe that I have a list of albums that honestly represents my taste in music. It has helped me, in many ways, to gain a better understanding of what my favorite albums actually are as opposed to what I may have originally perceived them to be.

Judging solely by this post and your chart, I'd love to see more of you on the forums 😄
