Townes Van Zandt is a country/folk icon for a very good reason and definitely has the edge for me on this one.

Townes for sure, Kanye is spotty for me and Townes has a lot more material that I enjoy. Pretty easy choice.

van Zandt for me. I love Kanye's first two records, and he's been responsible for sporadic moments of brilliance since, but Townes is one of the greatest songwriters of all-time and even in his more pedestrian moments is still a joy to listen to.
