I think Miho Hatori's solo album is really underrated. Nice quirky pop tunes in a range of different styles; sort of similar to Bjork. For those that don't know,Miho was the lead singer of Cibo Matto and performed Noodle's vocals on Gorillaz debut album.

The craptacular album artwork probably didn't help exposure...

My friend Erik told me the exact same thing. Still haven't listened to it though. I'm not a huge fan of 50's era rock. Maybe that's why.

So true. I guess the times had passed him by, or people couldn't see past his 'indiscretions', so this didn't launch a comeback (unless you count his country career). Truly epitomizes rock and roll, and an epic live performance. Rivals James Brown's Live at the Apollo.

Agreed. I think it's by far their best! I don't understand all the hatred towards it either. It baffles my cranium.

Also, if anyone cares at all, an album that's really underrated by a band that's wayy underrated:

Kinda gay band name, but they never disappoint when I give em a listen. I thought maybe I would have lost interest in them at some point, but no. They are amazing. Cereally.

Me too. Top album. I used to work with some bloke who was in a band with Chris White. Not that this bears any relevance to anything.

As for under-rated albums... a personal favourite would by Black Moth Super Rainbow's Dandelion Gum... a truly stunning piece of neo-psych, but no-one seems to want to know. Which is a shame.

a few of my favourite underrated albums:

AYWKUBTTOD - Worlds Apart their major label debut & fan-hated album is actually well put together and features not one bad song
The Artifacts - That's Them this came out in '96 when hip hop was starting its decent into bling & crappishness and is one of the few 100% pure hip hop albums of the time
BRMC - Take Them On, On Your Own severely under-appreciated 2nd album that's all straight garage rock - an improvement of their hugely popular debut IMO.
Buffalo Tom - Big Red Letter Day many prefer the Dinosaur Jr-ness of their earlier albums, but i think the addition of more acoustic-based songs makes for a better album.
The Connells - Boylan Heights With R.E.M. being the biggest alt band in the '80's, it's shocking that The Connells didn't receive the same recognition - Boylan Heights is equally as good as Document or Green
Grant Lee Buffalo - Fuzzy this was released when Nirvana & Grunge were taking over the world, so it's a shame it didn't make a bigger impression - maybe 1 of the most overlooked albums from the '90's
Hell Is For Heroes - Self-titled one of the best UK bands to come out in the 2000's. They were plagued by problems with their record company, their debut was overhyped before release, then labelled as a disappoint once it was out. This was their 3rd, and sadly final album before disbanding, and is also their best.
Nada Surf - Lucky This Weight Is A Gift and Let Go were both great albums, but i think Lucky has better songs

I actually think that Whitechocolatespacegg is Liz Phair's best. Exile in Guyville just caused a bigger stir, but musically, it doesn't stack up.

I could list dozens, but the first thing that comes to mind (not in exclusion to others) is Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. You could pick Orange (1995), Now I got Worry (1997), or Acme (1999). How this band has flown below the radar of not just the general public, but music critics as well is beyond me. So much attitude... It's one of those things - I wish they were more recognized, but I'd feel resentful if every schmuck out there started listening to them. I guess I'm a snob.

The Music - "The Music": did you guys ever listen to it? I guess no and this is how a brilliant album doesn't make a success (and forget 2 other cd's - they have sound, speed, everything - but they lack tunes)

Warsaw Village Band - "Uprooting" and "People's Spring": two absolutely stunning examples how folk music should look like

Radiohead - "Hail To The Thief" and Thom Yorke - "The Eraser" - I am very surprised they aren't considered a masterpieces... modern music in its best

Ane Brun - "A Temporary Dive", "Duets", "Live In Scandinavia": I was shocked this fantastic songwriter wasn't even in the database... she has absolutely everything to be a star (probably except for a nationality: she isn't neither british nor american but Norwegian)

Salif Keita - "Moffou": haunting release of african star that should be a star everywhere... "Moffou" is his best album packed with SONGS

At The Drive-In - "Relationship of Command": goosebumps guarantied with the last one from Omar A Rodriguez Lopez before he created The Mars Volta

Blonde Redhead - "Misery Is A Butterfly"

Cinematic Orchestra - "Every Day"

Skalpel - in general they are really good if you like new sounds in Jazz from Ninja Tune

Robotobibok - "Instytut Las": for lovers of originality

Joanna Newsome - "The Milk-Eyed Mender": so sweet and SO great

Lhasa - real diamond

Mozdzer Danielsson Fresco - "The Time": beautiful album that has beaten up The Crazy Frog, Britney Spears, Linkin Park and rest of crappy MTV company (at least in Poland)

Mum: check this Icelanders if you're a fan of (also often overlooked) Sigur Ros

The National - "Boxer"

16 Horsepower - "Sackcloth 'N' Ashes"
