It's already been touched upon a lot. Had Lou Reed been a bit more consistent i might give it to him, but Marvin's just too good to beat
I agree on the whole, but I will always have some love for Reed inside me. Even on his most spotty solo releases he has this endearing quality to him, along with having a few gems of solo albums. I don't think most of it compares to Fear or even Paris 1919 except for Berlin, but I do love Reed. Cale has more great albums though, and my god if the opening track to Fear isn't one of my favorites of the 70s. Cale vs. Gaye though would be way too hard of a vote for me.

Gaye. As I've said previously, I don't think anybody had a more fruitful, consistent 1970s in terms of musical output. That run was just stellar. Lou Reed's solo stuff is often great, but his best stuff doesn't match Gaye's for me, nor was he as consistent.

As amazing as Gaye is and as much as I voted for him in this round, I do actually feel like Lou Reed's solo work is pretty unfairly forgotten. Obviously Transformer is a pretty well loved glam album, but aside from that you don't get much appreciation outside of the less common Berlin love. Berlin is an amazing album though, and even some of his more spotty stuff like Street Hassle has amazing moments. The title track on that album in my mind is up there with some of his best work. Aside from that, Coney Island Baby, New York, The Blue Mask, they're all good albums and worthy of more than they get.

Still, What's Going On and Here, My Dear alone are probably enough to convince me to vote Gaye over Reed as a solo artist. Gaye was a genius visionary type that only comes every so often. Stack him against Cale's solo work though, and I don't know who I would take.
