That's a toughie. I was too into classic rock or old folk before the new discoveries. The album that got me out of classic stuff and into the new millenium was definitely Funeral, but the album that got me into toher genres was probably a hip hop album like Paul's Boutique. I couldn't stand hip hop beforehand. I know M B V got me into shoegaze and dream pop. Ever since then. I explored a lot.

The Mantle by Agalloch

This album really made me start to appreciate and enjoy metal.

When i was younger (11 or 12) I was just trying to find music to listen to on youtube and stuff, and some of my friends liked Swedish and Norwegian power metal, so I listened to that for a few months and really learned to dig it, but this album was what opened my mind to other types of metal. I think this was also my gateway to hardcore punk.

I used to be a strictly classic rock guy, but then in high school I listened to In Utero. The rest is history.

Honky Château by Elton John

I was a modern country music fan until I heard this. Yep, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, the whole nine yards…Thank goodness for that Volvo commercial with "Rocket Man" in it. I listened to that song 2500 times (I know, a bit obsessive) and then bought Honky Chateau.

What about Times struck more of a chord (or rather, shook you up out of your comfort zone) more effectively than Freewheelin'? I've always been partial to the latter, and the former is honestly one of my least favorites of his golden era, and I'm interested in the visceral, first listen appeal it has/had for people.

I'd say the album that finally broke me free was Bob Dylan's 'Times they are a Changin'. The change had slightly begun before this however, with the 'Freewheelin' Bob Dylan', but as I said a second ago, it was 'Times they are a Changin' that really confirmed it.

Much like a few already mentioned, MBDTF opened up hip-hop to my ears. After that, I wanted to listen to every genre imaginable. Weirdly, a hip-hop album sent me off in tangents for country, metal, world music... Beautiful stuff.

Shortly after that, though, I discovered this:

I was 12 and listened to the top 40 radio station. This was the summer of Boyz II Men and Amy Grant and Mariah Carey. Then, just as 8th grade was about to start, these came out within a month of each other:

I was already into pop, hiphop, and electronic music (especially house), but I knew I was missing something: Rock music. So this album helped me enjoy the sound of the guitar, and before I knew it I was listening queens of the stone age.
But that's not the only thing. This album seemed to break all the rules: I thought, to make good music you need a lot of time, a lot of instruments, and I thought music should not be repetitive. If they could make an album within three weeks with only some guitars, a drum machine and a vocoder, that has almost no diversity, and I still enjoy it...
then there are no rules.

The moment which I really felt I was out of the genre shackles, was when I listened kraftwerk. I was almost like: 'Wait. Why exactly do I like this?'

The album was curated by Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong & Trevor Fung, with liner notes by Terry Farley. I didn't know at the time how influential they'd turn out to be over the next decade or more.
