I actually like Dear Catastrophe Waitress and Write About Love a lot, but their first two albums will always be their best work.

The Life Pursuit by Belle & Sebastian

I love all of Belle & Sebastian's albums, yet I can hardly even get through this album. There are a few good singles-quality songs, but to me the rest is just bland.

For me their last great album was Arab Strap,Fold your hands was alright but from Storytelling onwards, like you said had few quality Singles(or potential) but as albums they don't quite work.

Steely Dan's Everything Must Go

It's not Terrible, but even Two Against Nature had 5 or 6 fairly engaging songs... and neither of their two recent albums hold a candle to anything they did before (yes, including Gaucho.)

"The Machines of God" is definitely a massive blemish on the legacy of the original lineup Pumpkins. Five phenomenal records (Gish, SD, Piscies, MCIS, Adore) followed by a "meh at best" one.

As for the A Hard Day's Night, it has always been one of my favourite early Beatles albums, I always enjoy listening to it. It's probably my second favourite after Rubber Soul from their 1963-1965 era. Their songwriting became mature compared to their first two releases and I like the mixture of fast songs and (the opening song, Can't Buy Me Love, Any Time at All, I'll Cry Instead, or You Can't Do That) and the lyrical, slower songs like If I Fell, And I Love Her. I'll Be Back is maybe an exception, it's like a song from Beatles For Sale, more melancholic and they sound tired compared to the other songs from A Hard Day's Night.

Highlight is Any Time At All. It's one of my favourite Beatles songs. It's the first song where Lennon's voice reminds me of his later works, even if it's only the first two seconds of the song.
