Well, it is exactly how the site ranks it too. How to go from here without mentioning the endless subjectivity vs. objectivity discussion? 🤔 Okay, that just failed! I guess the Stones are and always will be remembered and acclaimed for their rootsier stuff. We can always be thankful that an album like Aftermath isn't completely overlooked.

EDIT: OK, technically the site only ranks it as #6, but out of these albums it's the same ranking.

Completely agree. You could add Paint It Black (US version), Lady Jane, & Under Your Thumb which are all distinctively and uniquely Stones through and through. It was a one-liner meant to capture not only the predominant characteristic and feel Aftermath, but also its place in Stones history of which I still feel it does well enough for a one-liner. The Stones always transcended their source material even on their earliest albums which were almost entirely covers.

edit: Notice that I have Aftermath as an "essential" album and #3 overall. I also wrote a mini-essay on it earlier in the week comparing the US vs. UK versions because I love it so much and wanted to put it into my overall chart.

Ha. Yeah, no wonder! I prefer my Stones as Beatles imitators. Even though their satanic album borders on the self-parodic, I find it their most inspiring. Not many bands could come up with a such rambling and hippie-nonsensical drugged up jam as "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)... well, not many dared to not remove it from the final release anyway! 🤣 Not to mention the intro to "2000 Light Years from Home", one of the trippiest things ever! Don't get me wrong, I like Exile on Main St., but I always end up feeling like I'm listening to the same song over and over.

Ughh.. Honestly all five of what I deemed their essential recordings from this stage have occupied the top spot of this list this week (besides Let It Bleed). Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, and Sticky Fingers are often grouped together as a stylistic trilogy by most critics. But, that's not entirely accurate even though the difference is subtle. To me Beggars Banquet has quite a distinct personality compared with the 70s hard rock (n’ roll) of Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed.

Essential
Beggars Banquet (70s rock begins here. Where the Stones craft their signature sound. The perfect melding of honky tonk country & blues.)
Exile On Main Street
Aftermath (US) - the culmination of their straight-up blues worship
Sticky Fingers (The Stones on steroids.)
Let It Bleed (Stones add some muscle and 70s hard rock bombast to their signature sound.)

Solid Additions
Between the Buttons (UK version since it has Back Street Girl; one of the biggest mind fuck songs ever. BTB is quite charming and underrated)
