As others have pointed out, this matchup sucks balls. Both are amazing.

The one problem I have with Meet the Residents is that invariably at some point during the second half of the album I do get a bit tired of their music. Especially the last track, N-Er-Gee. Whereas, Red is one of those albums that completely sucks me in. I never even think about turning it off once it begins. It's one of those cohesive, synergistic albums that just builds & builds until I get to its colossal final track - Starless - which just leaves me begging for more. 😈

Another really hard matchup. Within their respective artists' discographies, both albums occupy that space of "absolutely essential but not quite the best," so I can't decide it that way. Both were pretty envelope-pushing and both are incredible works of art. Still, I cut my teeth on punk rock, so I'd feel dirty letting Red pass by a group of weirdo situationists who defaced a Beatles album cover and all of popular music.

I always remember reading an interview with John Lydon - as Public Image were starting up and he was attempting to throw off the shackles of having been in the Sex Pistols - in which he was talking about his influences, specifically Can and dub music and Captain Beefheart. He tells of how Trout Mask Replica was one of the greatest records he'd ever heard, how he remembered smoking a joint, putting that album on, and then laughing his ass off for the entirety, overjoyed at the sheer gall of Beefheart for having put together such a glorious mess that sounded like nothing he'd heard before. Meet the Residents did that for me. It was hilarious, crazy, totally over-the-top. It was a glorious mess, a disorienting record full of crazy snippets of random noise and pop culture references. I've come to prefer Eskimo (I think that's their masterpiece), as well as maybe even Third Reich'n'Roll and Not Available, but hearing their debut for the first time is still one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had. (That said, there are many Residents records that I just hate, though I'm sure they'd be disappointed if that weren't the case.) It was one of the many great records I discovered through reading Simon Reynolds' Rip It Up and Start Again, and though it wasn't my favourite at the time (parts of it were just entirely unlistenable to me), I just remember being absolutely entranced by it, and particularly that final track, which eventually descends into a total deconstruction of boogie-woogie with some sort of demon Louis Armstrong mumbling something about "energy" over and over. Fantastic stuff.

I like King Crimson. They're one of the few prog bands not to come out of Germany whose music I genuinely enjoy, and whilst Red isn't my favourite it's still a pretty dope rock record. But the choice is easy here. There are many records in this tournament I would rather put on and listen to than Meet the Residents, and I can't honestly envision myself voting for it in every matchup, but my vote goes to them this time, for the sheer gall to have put together such a glorious mess that sounded like nothing I'd heard before.
