When I was younger, I enjoyed music the most when I was holed up in my room, listening to an album over and over. Now that I have a family, I enjoy music the most at dinner. I'll put on an album--maybe something new, maybe something classic--while we eat. My son is only 2, but he loves music. He has opinions about new albums! It's so much fun to explore that world with him.

Yeah, usually while I'm driving, though more atmospheric albums like those by Kraftwerk are preferable while I'm reading.

summer months i amass a lot of music since i have more free time but mainly just listen to favorites and let them open up. winter is more my "expand my horizons in every possible direction, clean up year-end list stuff, etc." time. my favorite times to listen to albums are during bike rides or lying in bed. i've taken recently to listening to about one or two albums a day with fully rapt attention lying in my room in the dark and it's been wooooonderful (mind you these are all-time favorites for me - i'm curious about how this model would work for music i wasn't as familiar with/excited about)

old vs new

i find that i go through periods where all i want to listen to is old & familiar music, and my ears aren't really open to new music... so i can end up with a backlog of new music i've acquired but not yet explored.

then at some point the old-music phase will end, and my ears will start sucking up all the new music they can find 😄

It's super cool to see that everyone seems to have a unique answer to this, I feel like that's not something I see a lot on here.

Usually in my daily life I have so much stuff in my mind. Music works as a perfect escape for many emotions and feelings, or simply just to go by with life. But it's only when I'm actually in a some sort of vacation or an apparent no responsibility period of my life that I enjoy the music the most.

For me there's something special about traveling on the subway, or walking city blocks with the right songs cranked up in the headphones. A really good buzz enhances that even more. I've definitely stumbled home from shows blasting something I love, feeling each beat, chord, word deep within my soul.

You guys on BEA stress me out when you all go off in your little cliques discussing albums I have never listened to nor heard off; it really can sometimes make me feel unworthy ;). So yes, I get stressed sometimes and need to make sure I'm up on my listening. Take it as a back handed compliment.

Anyway, I get most satisfaction out of music when I begin to learn an album well and begin to grasp and understand it. It's just nice to have an extra album with me and another one which represents another stage of my life. For example recently, these have been key:

I just love the fact I can shout some of Springsteen's killer lyrics with confidence and can identify and hum along to the acoustic subtleties found on The Wild Hunt.

2003-2007: When I first started to really get into music communities and music beyond a quiet inexperience. While I was inspired by my peers who were ten to twenty years my senior to digest and understand music more this was probably the most carefree of my days with enjoying music. There were no stipulations and I wasn't as jaded despite experiencing a close family member's death in June of 2003. Music was my biggest hobby and it was what I devoted most of my time to; which is why I've heard so much. This is where I took an interest in music history, genre history, and all of that as well and I did that as one-hundred miles per hour.

It's why I think it's my "most enjoyment period" plus well, I was still a teenager my mind was overeager to accept new sounds and new things than where it's currently at.

Oh man, I've gone consecutive days without listening to music before and it's so satisfying when I'm finally able to listen to something.

I think I'd actually go through withdraw without music for some time, which is concerning.

I don't knoe if this is in the "topic" but I don't think I enjoy music today the same way I used to do in the past....it's going to be a year since I am on BEA, and this certainly changed my way to listen and enjoy music...... To clarify what I mean is I love music always but sometimes I'll find myself in long stretches where I haven't listened to anything new, and I find myself more interested in other things like video games or audiobooks or China.

Sometimes I enjoy music more. I will go through phases where music is my main interest. Other times I'm more interested in other things. I thought maybe this was strange but maybe other people have similar odd situations. Maybe music is always your main interest but perhaps there are certain conditions that make you "feel" it more.
