This has changed slightly. I still do the add star ratings then divide track numbers. However add to that:

Physicality: Do I own it or not?
Ranking
1 - Physically own
II - Digitally own
III - Used to own physically
IV - Downloaded

Par: Just like golf, only music related.
eg. 0 means all five-star tracks, hence a par score.
2 means two away from "par"

Soundtracks, live albums and mini-albums accrue a +1 to their par score. Thinking whether to discount interludes and segue tracks...

I classify the albums in four categories.

A - class = 80 - 100
B - class = 60 - 75
C - class = 40 - 55
D - class = < 35

This means that the album, I estimated that at least the worthy of 80, placed in A - class.

A - Class is graded into five levels.

A = 80
A+= 85
AA = 90
AA+ = 95
AAA = 100

More than 80 levels can be achieved only after the later phases. (= High-intensity listening experience).
I try to keep the median level of 75 (= BB +). If criticizing just good music, Class A, to increase the number. If criticizing bad music, Category D, in turn, increase the amount. When the site is called The Best Albums Ever, have to seek more so-called good music. 😁

Every album that I have selected the top 100 list has reached at least level 80. Disintegration (40.) is the one. It is on the list simply because the whole album is interesting. Not because it has two very famous songs (= Lullaby and Lovesong). In turn, many "smash hit album", which is known throughout the album, does not necessarily reach the A class. (= David Bowie / Let 's dance and Sting / Ten Summoner's Tales).

When it comes to prog I also think in terms of time rather than tracks.

For example, I only really like one track on Soft Macine's Third,
but since that track is the amazing "Moon in June", and it's 20 minutes long,

but it doesn't always work for me.

It is a 70-75. Tarkus. I like the part of the Iconoclast. What do you think about album artwork? Bacamarte's record, I have to listen to it more often. The disc is relatively unknown to many. I found it, when it was played in a Finnish progressive rock radio program in focused a couple of years ago. Hybris, has now risen to the list! 😄 I think 80 is good, and if the disk starts to attract more, I will give more stars.

I reworked my system recently, and it works well:

5 stars - special:100%| I get it, and it's flawless
4.5 stars - great:95%| the big league
4 stars - great:90%| love it
3.5 stars - good:85%| low fav
3 stars - good:75-80%| pleasant (most albums)
2.5 stars - okay:65-70%| so-so
2 stars - okay:50-60%| mediocre
1.5 stars - bad:40-45%| but not terrible
1 star - bad:30-35%| terrible
0.5 stars - we hate you please die

I divide the amount of songs on the album by the amount of songs I like. I might adjust the score if one of the songs i like is exceptionally long (for example, it's be stupid to give tarkus a 16% score when the title track is longer than the rest of the album put together)

i used to have this written down but i seem to have lost it. here's what i recall:

10 = perfect, and perfection is a RARE thing
9 = near perfect
8 = very good
7 = good
6 = good enough to keep
5 = not good enough to keep but ok
4 = not good with some hint of decency
3 = not good
2 = bad
1 = rotten
0 = terribly, utterly awful

On BEA, a 55-or-less is an album i've tried and have tossed. 60-and-above are keepers.

If every song matters, is amazing, and it is not just a bunch of songs, but that it gels- 100

Everything above except maybe a song or two are good to ok, and maybe doesn't gel- 90

Good collection of songs, but not necessarily an album- doesn't really gel - 80

Only a few key songs, the rest is mediocre at best - 70

Only the singles are good, might as well buy their best of stuff- 60.

My rating system is based more on the stars than the percentage. I think a generalization is a better indicator of an album's worth than a precise percentage point, because your opinion on an album will change over time and a percentage will be quite often invalidated.
I first listen to the album and rate each track individually in order of how much i like them 1-5 stars.
Song rating breakdown:
1 star-worthless (my rarest rating)
2 stars-worse than average but not worthless
3-Average in every way
4-better than average, but with an essential flaw holding it back from being truly enjoyable
5-worth your time and money to listen to, does not have to be a flawless masterpiece, just has to be enjoyable enough to cross this threshold. Essentially, the 5th star means that this song is listenable.

I then count how many tracks have 5 stars out of the entire album, not anything below 5 stars because crap is just not worth your time, I then do some quick math to churn out my rating. example:No Line On The Horizon has 7 five star tracks, 1 three star track and 2 four tracks
7/11 five star tracks = a 4 star album

This system has served me well here is a sampling of each of my exemplary ratings
1=Results May Vary-Limp Bizkit
2=Futuresex/Lovesounds-Justin Timberlake
3=The Green Album-Weezer
4=21-Adele
5=Revolver-The Beatles, OK Computer-Radiohead, Highway 61 Revisited-Bob Dylan, Speak For Yourself-Imogen Heap

Etc. I have some albums on my list that are 4 stars, but none that are three star albums.
