Ira Kaplan is still a great guitarist and a very essential reason to why Yo la Tengo is acclaimed, but he just isn't on par with Carlos.

Yeah, pretty much all this.

While there were a lot of rock guitarists trying to incorporate jazz into their music in the late '60s and early '70s, I think Santana was one of the very few who pulled it off without spiraling into either banality or wankery. I'm not a big fan of the stuff that made him popular, but I think many of his more jazz-oriented albums in the mid-70s were quite good, and that's almost entirely on the weight of his playing. And, as Romanelli mentioned, that's just one part of a long and diverse career.

It's an individual choice, of course, so I'm not trying to knock those who prefer Kaplan's work. Just saying, is all.

Carlos Santana gets my vote. Santana have always been an 'okay ranging on good' band for me, and one of the major reasons the band holds up for me is because of his guitar playing.

Ira Kaplan is still a great guitarist and a very essential reason to why Yo la Tengo is acclaimed, but he just isn't on par with Carlos.

One song you don't like negates a fantastic body of work 35+ years in the making against the one album you've heard by YLT? Is that one album of guitar work really better than the sum of the career of Carlos Santana?

I'm actually very surprised Santana is behind on this one. I don't typically support the 60's/70's rock guitarists, but Santana has a perfect concoction of blues and spanish guitar in his style. It's just so sexy.
