I was really enjoying this thread. While the outcome was never in doubt, I thought there were a lot of interesting conversations going on. From the discussions about EVH's influence on rock music to Muslim-Bigfoot's points about the mechanicalness of his shredding to satie's back-and-forth with Rocky about using objective/subjective criteria in their votes. And yes, I was even enjoying Mercury's tongue-in-cheek defense of Van Halen.

The fact that this devolved into one user lecturing another on his sense of humor is just a fucking drag. I find that way more annoying than anything Mercury said.

That's fair, we all find different things annoying. Though I will say when I was sick (it's calmed down) I seemed to have turned into a blatant snarky sort of douchebag and I apologize for that but the words I said did come from my center; I didn't find the comments humorous or even entertaining at any level and decided to speak about it when asked to elaborate, maybe I should not have elaborated or knew when to pipe down after I had said my piece. But what's done is done.

I didn't mean to get on a high chair and wag this sort of newspaper around. I'm not anybodies boss and really it just boils down to me overreacting due to a different sense of humor (which is subjective as all hell anyhoo). I apologize for bringing the mood down, I know I irritated Rocky with it.

there are a lot of fair reasons to criticize Gowie, but I don't think anyone would be letting him up the stairs of an ivory tower with his handfuls of bluegrass revival records, which is just to say that he's not the close-minded snob you're looking for.

I went with Mascis, but not by a lot. I don't think EVH's playing is quite as mechanical as some have said here and I do enjoy some of his stuff, but I can certainly sympathize with those who have complained about how he has influenced rock music.

I didn't mean to imply that putting biases aside would obviously give EVH the advantage, I was just speaking generally. If he's not your thing, he's not your thing, no worries. All I ask is that he, along with everyone else, is given a fair shot.

Well, I can't speak for everyone who threw their vote to Mascis, but within or without Van Halen, EVH is just not my cuppa. I would even go so far as to say that personally the energy and exuberance of Van Halen as an act makes them a lot more enjoyable to listen to as a unit than when EVH is just noodling around in "Eruption" or his various guest solos on songs such as "Beat It."

I do think that weighing in some amount of "objectivity" (an annoyingly abstract and fleeting term that no one seems to want to actually let me in on a definition for when it comes to music) when comparing these guys cross-stylistically is important, but I also think it's a big hurdle to jump, and I tend to see these claims of objectivity being neglected only brought up when sacred cows are slaughtered such as EVH and the other RS Mag picks. I think ultimately everyone's gonna go with their gut and retroactively rationalize anyway, so I hear your concerns, but I don't see them as something to get too concerned about.

Haha nice.

I would say though that when we're evaluating guitarists, we do have to attempt to put our biases to their band aside. We're looking at the guitarist, not necessarily the band. This wasn't "Whose the better band? Van Halen or Dinosaur Jr?" because that's an entirely different discussion. This was, who is the better guitarist, EVH or J Mascis? I think that's something very important to keep in mind.

I don't like what Van Halen influenced much, and it's a style that, to me, thankfully did not endure. Twas the real beginning of the end of the guitar solo, IMO.
