Ok? I don't get how that's particularly complex. I mean, sure it's nice to see someone make somewhat interesting songs (maybe I should preface this by stating that The Smiths is neither one of my favorite bands nor a group I think is anywhere near the acclaim it receives), but just because someone does something in an interesting way doesn't automatically make them better. As a side note, I honestly just don't think that either of the songs you mentioned do anything that I would find intriguing. I also don't find MBV all that interesting, but I do think that if I were to compare the two artists that MBV did more interesting things than The Smiths. Also, it's not as if this is coming from a huge fan of either of these guitarists or groups. I think neither of these guitarists nor their groups did anything amazing (unlike most people voting). In fact, these two should have been out on the first round, but that's irrelevant to the discussion.

Still, Marr easily. His work on The Smiths' debut is just too goddamn good.

Anyway, Marr. I feel Shields' more revolutionary approach of guitar sound is more about the sound than about just the guitar. Plus Marr was in the fucking Smiths.

I looked at this, and then I thought about it for a minute, and then I realised I don't care. I can't seem to get excited about comparing these two guitarists. I've tried, but even as a guitarist I just don't really care for the nuances of technical ability or know how to compare them. I like the woozy oceans of sound that Shields creates - they're genuinely exciting to me, big and beautiful and psychedelic, blankets I can get lost in for hours on end. I love a good many of Marr's riffs, and admire the way he shaped the sound of one of my favourite bands, being easily as important to their appeal as Morrissey. I love how 'New You' oscillates and squelches like a 303 bassline, just as I love how the opening of 'This Charming Man' dances like a lovedrunk geek at an indie disco, but I just don't care who wins, I don't care who the "better" guitarist is, and I wouldn't have a clue how to figure it out even if I did.

Don't get me wrong, Marr is pretty good. However, I don't think that he's particularly amazing. For ex. The most intriguing song he's played guitar on (for me) is dashboard and that mayhaps took 10 minutes to replicate it when learning to play it on guitar. Simply speaking, I don't think he's overly skilled in regards to actually playing the instrument, but he certainly has some creativity going on. Of course, I think Kevin Shields is monumentally more creative than Johnny Marr so vote to Mr. Shields (of course, I'd take Nels Cline over either of these guys).

Yeah, Shields is good. Marr's a god. This is like Reinhardt vs. Justin Vernon. This is like Berry vs. Lissack. This just shouldn't be close.
