still haven't listened to Joanna Jewsom, Black Keys, Caribou, or Drake. I'm most surprised by Drake's appearance on several charts: is it really that good? I was not impressed at all by the singles from Drake...
not sure if everyone has seen this (I'm sure a lot of you have) but it is very interesting to look at. It is Metacritic's (the review aggregator) collating of critic's top ten for 2010 and assigning a point system in order to rank the highest rated albums of the year. There is something like 80 lists taken into consideration so far, including the excellent one by Resident Advisor just mentioned..

Ha ha ha. "P4k" is complicated. We all know it isn't exactly what it was a few years ago. The fact that it has grown so influential kind of changed its function from the glue that held together a bunch of fractured indie scenes of bearded weirdos to a sort of lame authoritarian brand and sole taste-maker fraught with its own boring predictable tendencies. Don't get me wrong- as much as I, personally, am at odds with their narrow tastes and generally humorless nature, it's totally necessary that they maintain it for the sake of their brand. After all, they had the foresight to realize that helping break international acts like Arcade Fire and BSS in conjunction with paying attention to fringe local scenes would create a unified homebase for an essentially heterogeneous culture. Throw in some good reviews for select aggressively vapid mainstream hip hop to target some common white-guilt and keep things interesting, and you've got yourself an ideological force capable of attracting any girl with bangs.

Align yourself ideologically with brands like Urban Outfitters, and watch your little engine-that-could propitiously navigate to high school football parties and sorority houses everywhere! Before you know it you have Flunitrazepam-addled girls named Lauren and Tiffany arguing the merits of Karen O's stage banter, and screaming "That's Not My Name!" as they refill the cups. It's a genius operation they got over there; you'll always be successful if you successfully market non-conformity. And someone mentioned it before, if you have the Kanye-effect on yourside, where even your enemies are obsessively whispering about it, you have a very valuable power in your hands.

Anyways, I don't keep up with it anymore. I found that once I admitted I don't have cool or "correct" tastes everything got a lot easier and more fun. IMO their ideology generally sacrifices great songs for cool textures, very generally speaking (there are a lot of staffers there by now). And who the hell values them as an authority on urban music? That still slays me. I'll still read Allmusic.com in a heartbeat over P4k, but I will probably still follow their business ventures because it's interesting to me. At the end of the day my qualms with P4k aren't too different from my qualms with music criticism in general (bad English majors writing about MUSIC!) and I wish them the best. Vampire Weekend still sucks though.

I loved Pitchfork when I first found out about it. Then I started to really hate it. And now I’ve come to some sort of complacent medium.

For me, the critics on the site are more interested in sounding smart, using colorful words, and being funny than in actually telling you what they think of an album. I’ve noticed that their reviews can usually be condensed into one or two paragraphs, instead of the three to five paragraphs you usually get.

That being said, I often agree with their opinions, and occasionally, they reveal things about an album I hadn’t previously considered. I like the layout of their site, compared to that of other music sites, and I find that they report news about artists I actually care about.

I don’t think too much about the reviews themselves, though; I only read a review after I’m familiar with an album, because otherwise, it’s difficult for me to hear the music without thinking about what critics have said about it. It’s a serious problem I have, but that’s how it is. I use the site mainly for news, actually.

Love them or hate them, I think the people at Pitchfork are getting just what they want – music-lovers like us to talk about them and their opinions. Kind of a Kanye strategy. But now we’re critiquing the critics… and critiquing each other’s critiques of the critics. One would think it has to stop somewhere…

Anyway, regarding Pitchfork’s list, I was amazed to see The Suburbs so low, but I was really happy to see The Monitor so high. Kind of a surprising list. The end.

Pitchfork is ok. No better than you or me when it comes to music judgement. Their list is poor. Maybe next year it will be better. Maybe they'll realise the new Kanye album wasn't that good. Maybe they'll realise the 'Tron OST' was far better than 5.5. Maybe they'll give Ghost the 9+ his new album deserves. It always makes for an interesting read, and I tend to agree with them when it comes to James Blake and Pavement amongst others. I can't understand how Drake and Gucci Mane both got 8+. I certainly can't understand how they missed Roc Marcy's album out of their list, especially after giving 8+ earlier in the year. But they're just another music site. I treat them like I treat the Bible. Take them both with a pinch of salt.

Naturally disagree with a lot of their ordering but my biggest gripe is that they fucked over 'Heartland' and 'The Golden Archipelago'. Also 'Sisterworld' got snubbed as an honorary mention and 'Gemini', 'Thank Me Later' and the humongous crap that is 'Crazy For You' got in. Glad to see 'High Violet' didn't touch the top 20. But I don't get why P4k have such a boner for James Blake. Anyway thats my 2 cents.

This is the list that ive been waiting for. Sorry that you have your gripes with it, but for me this is the be all and end all of annual music lists. In Pitchfork I Trust.

no i agree they're probably one of the better if not the best music publications out there. I think that's why I have way more specific gripes with their lists than any other critics. I expect a lot from them.

ha ha fair enough. The way I see it is, if I disagree with pitchfork, it's because I am wrong and I dont see it yet. but yeah, lists for this year are going to be a bit wonky because lets face it, it wasnt a fantastic year for music, so not many lists will be satisfying.

46 Black City - Matthew Dear
47 Public Strain - Women
48 Dagger Paths - Forest Swords
49 Gemini - Wild Nothing
50 King Of The Beach - Wavves
