For my money, 1971 was the ultimate year. L.A. Woman, Who's Next, Led Zeppelin IV are all their respective bands highlight albums (not best, omit LAW), two Beatles release great albums, Imagine containing a track considered by many to be the greatest of all time, Motown's What's Goin' On, At Fillmore East and the two Yes albums - case closed for me.

1970: it has the most albums in the overall top 500 (23) and top 1000 (34, tied with 1994).

1967 has a lot of points, but only 16 albums in the BEA top 500, and 20 albums in the top 1000.
1969 has 17 and 25.
1971 has 21 and 27.
1977 has 17 and 24.
1979 has only 9 and 20.
(1981 sucks, of course: its second best album is ranked 601st overall, and there are only 12 albums in the BEA top 1000, excluding Queen's Greatest Hits.)
1991 has 13 and 22.
1993 has 8 and 21.
1994 has 17 and 34, I would argue that it's the second best year.

Top 500 and top 1000 are pretty arbitrary, but I think give a better picture than BEA points, which are highly skewed by top albums. "OK Computer" accounts for nearly half the points of 1997.

1977 is my favorite year, but 1991 is a close second. 1966 through 1971 are all standout years.

1981 is the worst year in the past 50 years.

2013 is the best in music for me (so far at least).

Random Access Memories, The Electric Lady, R Plus Seven, The Bones Of What You Believe, The 20/20 Experience, Days Are Gone, Run The Jewels, BEYONCÉ, Tomorrow's Harvest, Woman, True Romance, Obsidian, Nepenthe, Cut 4 Me, Cupid's Head, Shaking The Habitual, Nonfiction...

A lot of really varied stuff that really struck a chord with me I suppose. Plus it was especially good for electronic music, so it suited me quite well.

Hard choice, but I'll have to go with 1969.
1977, 1983, 1991, 1994, 2000, 2007, 2010, and 2012 were also pretty good years.
