i really think you nailed it. i'm not big into iron maiden, but i don't disagree with your opinion. they are amazing musicians. metallica, u2, and rush are some of my most favorite bands, and they all wrote amazing music.

When I thought about the 80's what first came into my mind when thinking about good albums was who made them.I loved,& still do,the music from the 80's.When M.T.V. first came on it showed nothing but music videos 24 hours a day.It was a great time for me.I just sat fixated in front of the TV watching M.T.V.So I came up with 4 bands that I feel dominated in the 80's as far as putting out good albums all through the decade.I have purchased every one of these albums & still listen to them often.
Rush (Neil Pert's drumming & Geddy Lee's base playing help make all these good)
80) Permanent Waves
81) Moving Pictures
81) Exit Stage Left
82) Signals
84) Grace Under Pressure
85) Power Windows
87) Hold Your Fire
88) A Sow Of Hands
89) Presto

U2 (The Edge's guitar playing & the bands lyrics help make all these good)
80) Boy
81) October
83) War
84) The Unforgettable Fire
87) The Joshua Tree
88) Rattle And Hum

Metallica (The had it going on back in the day. Then they sold out & took a dive)
83) Kill Em All
84) Ride The Lightning
86) Master Of Puppets
88) And Justice For All

Iron Maiden
This is just my opinion so don't shoot me I'm just the piano player. Some people love this band & some hate them.I often find that the people who hate them have never really listened to them much other then a few songs.Every one of these albums is good.Filler on them is virtually hypothetical.Paul DiAnno does lead vocals on the first 2 & was good. But he was a punk singer in a metal band.Bruce Dickenson replaced him & is an astonishingly good singer with power & range.Steve Harris is unbelievable on bass & a prolific songwriter.Other members contribute with lyrics as well.Adrian Smith & Dave Murry generate intricate & harmonious guitar solos & are a 1 - 2 punch I feel is second to none.Clive Burr is on drums for the first 3 albums & is an excellent drummer. Then came Nicho McBrain as his replacement who is an even better drummer then Burr.Nicko is a monster drummer & drives the music with class ,power,& blazing speed. In my opinion Iron Maiden ruled the music world in the 80's in the studio & live in concert.

80) Iron Maiden
81) Killers
82) The Number Of The Beast
83) Piece Of Mind
84) Powerslave
86) Somewhere In Time
88) Seventh Son Of a Seventh Son

Ten top moments of the 80s, excluding the most obvious choices:

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood (83)
The Blues Brothers - OST (80)
Steve Earle - Guitar Town (86)
John Mellencamp - American Fool (82)
George Thorogood - Bad to the Bone (82)
Tina Turner - Private Dancer (84)
John Fogerty - Centerfield (85)
Robert Earl Keen - No Kinda Dancer (84)
Lyle Lovett - Lyle Lovett (86)
The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy and the Lash (85)

Well if you're not limited to english (-speaking) artists, check Odbrana i Poslednji Dani (1982) by a Serbian band Idoli (I actually have more to recommend, but this is the one I've been listening the most lately + it's been voted once as the best ex-yugoslavian album)..
1. Kenozoik
2. Poslednji Dani
...
6. Nebeska Tema
7. Rusija
...

Looking at my chart though, my favourite 80s albums are Isn't Anything (My Bloody Valentine), You're Living All Over Me (Dinosaur jr.), Boy, War (both U2), Treasure (Cocteau Twins)...

LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening

Though some tracks were recorded as early as 1977, this reissue is definitely an 80s album.

I second 'Rum, Sodomy and The Lash' and 'Oh Mercy'. Would also add 'Imperial Bedroom'.

In terms of hip-hop:
Eric B & Rakim - 'Paid In Full', 'Follow The Leader'
BDP - 'Criminal Minded', 'By All Means Necessary'
Queen Latifah - 'All Hail The Queen'
Kool G Rap - 'Road To The Riches'
3rd Bass - 'The Cactus Album'
EPMD - 'Strictyly Business', 'Unfinished Business'
Slick Rick - 'The Great Adventures of...'
The DOC - 'No-one Can Do It Better'

Obviously Public Enemy, the Beasties, Run DMC and NWA go without saying.

You said you're looking for albums that aren't on major lists, so I won't bother with U2 recommendations. But two albums I feel are often left out of lists for the '80s are:

Bob Dylan - Oh Mercy (1989)
The Icicle Works - The Icicle Works (1984)

The former is one of my favorite Dylan albums, probably right behind Highway 61 and Bringing It All Back Home (and yes, I've heard Blonde On Blonde and Blood on the Tracks).

The latter is an LP I picked up a few years ago simply because the cover looked cool, but they've got a nice sound. Also, I had no idea their drummer was the drummer for Oasis (and now for Beady Eye).

thanks, it's looking like most of the omissions I had were coming from metal (and don't think I would consider Zen Arcade metal, applerill), and I'm really only considering Guns n Roses, AC/DC, and Metallica (maybe Iron Maiden). This is one personal bias that will really show through the chart.

I've got everything in the top 40 Naples, so that's some decent reassurance I'm looking in the right places. But, isn't that Chuck Berry album re-released singles? I'm only including albums recorded 1979-1989 and released 1980-1989.

thanks to everyone else too, the only glaring thing I've missed other than most metal is King Crimson! keep the suggestions coming

Please don't forget Young Marble Giants' "Colossal Youth" !

As you've pointed out, The Chameleons are sadly overlooked.
I would add Television Personalities : "...And Don't the Kids Just Love It" and "The Painted World".
Check out The Dream Syndicate's "The Days of Wine and Roses". Really great !
Butthole Surfers also come to mind (thank you Scaruffi 😉 ).
And the Electric Light Orchestra's "Time" is a guilty pleasure.

You know I'm a post-punk freak, so I really dig Cabaret Voltaire, Tuxedomoon, Virgin Prunes and Mission of Burma.
You've enjoyed Violent Femmes' debut, so you might also enjoy "Hallowed Ground".

Good luck and happy (re)listening !!

Applerill wrote:

Good Eighties Albums? WHAT!?????

JK

Well, here's some essential-yet-generally-overlooked metal from the eighties:
Metallica-Master of Puppets: Duh, I'm listening to it right now)
Queensryche-Operation Mindcrime: An amazing Iron Maiden-esque concept album.
Iron Maiden-Number of the Beast/Piece of Mind/Powerslave: Put it in. Or else.
Ozzy Osbourne-Blizzard of Ozz
Candlemass-Epicus Doomicus Metallicus: The vocalist could be better, but this is still one of the best doom metal albums ever released.
Husker Du-Zen Arcade: This is a fun one.
Tori Amos-Y Kant Tori Read: Not really metal, but still a criminally overlooked album.
Nirvana-Bleach: When you get down to it, grunge it just punky doom metal. This is the epitome of that statement.
Dio-Holy Diver

I've never cared for Candlemass-I think the point of doom should be to instill a sense of dread and those goofy-ass high pitched vocals sort of prevent that from happening. Vocals are a total breaking point for me with a lot of bands, though. Never really thought much of Dio either outside of his stuff with Rainbow, God rest his soul. Nice picks on Bleach and Zen Arcade.
