Voting for K.R.I.T. on the Space rational. Think both are great and I probably prefer Boy In Da Corner overall, but I think K.R.I.T. is the better hip-hop album.

Sttin Here, Cut Em off.. sound nothing like hip hop I'd vote Boy In Da Corner over pretty much anything in the tourney though, was the best thing when it came out and still is now. One of few albums that pretty much everyone I know knows, heard I Luv U in a club other week everyone went mad for it

Both Skinny and I have already said that we're fine with however people want to vote, we're just saying what we think. To me, Boy in da Corner doesn't feel like hip hop, so I'm not going to vote for it in a hip-hop tournament. If you feel differently and think it's better than K.R.I.T., then by all means vote for it. I think there's a subjective element in any genre determination, so I'm not going to try to force my opinion on anyone else.

Also, I have absolutely no problem with people arguing about genre in these threads. I'd even say that I find this thread more interesting than most of the other threads in this already great tournament.

No war is necessary so long as users are able to live with each others' opinions.

I'd even say that I find this thread more interesting than most of the others in this already great tournament.

Sp4cetiger wrote:

Precedent allowed it in the tournament, so it does belong, but it's just not the better hip hop album (in my mind, anyway). Suppose we'd had a punk tournament instead and somebody had nominated American Idiot. Even though I love that album and you could make a good argument for putting it in a punk tournament, I think it works far better as pop than as punk. So I wouldn't vote for it in most match-ups in that tournament and I honestly think it would make the community look a little silly if it won. Same situation here.

Haha! Nice choice of albums. Is it that obvious that I would not like American Idiot? 🤣

anyways, if someone truly felt that American Idiot was the the best album in a tournament (*shudders at the thought*) I would honestly hope that they voted for it and not factor in how it may look to others. Some of my favorite punk albums are quite poppy so I personally don't have a problem with punk going in that direction. Again, I don't like when genres are used to restrict how we think or approach a particular album and feel that we should judge albums at this stage solely based on their own merits and not some intangibles such as it not being punk enough.

If this were a purist hip hop community, I would understand the reservations about including Boy In Da Corner. If this were a purist hardcore community, I would understand the reservations about including an album like American Idiot. But since most people here actually treasure albums that are genre straddling or in this case, from a genre that's obscure to us, I think it goes contrary to the inclusive, adventurous listening spirit of this community. To most of us I'd suspect Boy In Da Corner is similar enough to hip hop to be worthy of voting for solely based on its quality of being one of the best & inventive albums of the 2000s.

Just my thoughts. Looking ahead I'd just hate to see any genre focused tourneys become mini genre wars instead of focusing on what particular albums kick ass.

To be quite honest i've been mostly playing devil's advocate here, since I'm not really familiar enough with grime to have any argument, and I trust your knowledge of the subject matter far more than my own, but I think it's a worthwhile discussion to have in the context of a tournament based around a pretty wide-ranging genre with roots in sampling and borrowing from all over the spectrum.

Besides the fact that grime's musical template is almost totally exclusive from hip-hop, Dizzee's rapping itself is a descendant of jungle spitters, and reggae toasters before them. There are definitely hip-hop influences in terms of content, but in terms of flow and delivery Dizzee is a student of a style of rapping that is decidedly un-hip-hop. Matt Helders of the Arctic Monkeys regularly cites the way drums and percussion are used in hip-hop as his biggest influence - are we to accept, then, that Favourite Worst Nightmare is a hip-hop album? Because that's the level of hip-hop influence I hear in Boy in da Corner - a very small piece in a much larger, distinct puzzle. By your own comparison, would you not have an issue with the inclusion of The Low End Theory in a jazz tournament? I would. Also, I don't think Boy in da Corner is the impossible-to-categorise melting pot of styles that it's being made out to be - it strictly and stringently adheres to grime's template, and as such is a grime album, plain and simple. The best grime album, but a grime album nonetheless.

I'll admit, it's not a great analogy, but to say that Dizzee's brand of grime isn't a combo of UK Garage and hip hop is just as ignorant as if I were to say that it's directly derived from hip hop. The album takes from multiple musical ideologies and blends them. Just as the Roots, Tribe and others throw in loads of Jazz, or how Kanye's latest two records are as much rock/electronic albums as they are hip hop.

I guess the question, is what are the boundaries of hip hop or any genre really, and what do we do with these records that aren't textbook examples.

It's not quite as ridiculous as watching people bicker over what's shoegaze vs dreampop, but eventually you have to wonder what's the point

I think it just depends on how restrictive you set your boundaries for hip hop. I totally get that it sounds nothing like EPMD, but at the same time a lot of ideas from Boy in da Corner derive from the same place.
That's what I meant. Personally disqualifying it.

I think it just depends on how restrictive you set your boundaries for hip hop. I totally get that it sounds nothing like EPMD, but at the same time a lot of ideas from Boy in da Corner derive from the same place.

To me it's like not voting for King Crimson's Red in a rock tourney because it's prog.

This has also been my problem with genres/sub genres. Some things just won't fit seamlessly anywhere. I do think it'd suck if a grime record ended up winning to tournament, but it won't happen anyway.

I'm not advocating disqualifying it; I even acknowledged that many people view grime and hip-hop as practically synonymous. I just won't be voting for it on the basis that it isn't hip-hop to my ears. In fact, I'd go almost as far as to say that Boy in da Corner winning this tournament would be akin to a 1975 album winning the 1974 tournament (though it's obviously not quite that black and white).
