Anyway, regardless of what you title the genre, it's still referring to more or less the same thing.

These terms are quite different and this article, while unfortunately titled "American Primitivism", is actually a rough start to an article on "American Primitive Guitar". Take the rest of the this article in that context and look elsewhere for "American Primitivism". I wish that I knew how to correct this incorrect structure in Wikipedia.

That's crazy speak. Fahey's so incredible he was credited with his own genre (American Primitivsim). Sure it's a mix of early folk, blues and flamenco, but his playing is otherworldly.

. His style has been greatly influential and has been described as "American Primitive Guitar", a term which Fahey accepted as "It's as close as anything". This has often been confused with American Primitivism, including here at Wikipedia, which is a term borrowed from painting and quite different from American Primitive Guitar.

Anywho, I think of him more as just more interesting and avant-garde folk.

Iommi is the best of his genre, and the pioneer. I think of Fahey neither as the starting point nor the pinnacle. Both great, but Iommi, in the end, for me.

Iommi for me. I just adore his thick sound rhythmically and his simple and beautiful solos. Fahey is great, but kinda like with the Django vs Gilmour, it comes down to which has affected me more. I prefer Sabbath's sway over my soul.

I honestly don't care who wins this one. They are both fantastic and likely the most talented individuals within their respective genres.

EDIT: and are basically the inventors of their respective genres

Both are incredible masters of a genre. It's hard to imagine music without either. Fahey has me hypnotized so he gets my vote

Completely this. All due respect to Fahey, an excellent musician for sure, but 75% of the time I just don't enjoy his music. I wish I could reproduce the 25% more often, but most of the time he's just too dry for my taste.

Iommi, for me. Again, at this stage, this is just a personal preference. I appreciate what Fahey does more than I love it, whereas I adore Iommi's work throughout those first four Sabbath albums (and intermittently afterwards). I wouldn't begrudge Fahey victory though.
