Goddammit I wasn't able to see any of the films this week, so I can't do the annual "will win/should win" thing. Too many nominated films still to see...

But anyway, I'll be happy if either Birdman or Boyhood win (which seems to be the case now).

Not that it's going to be any indication, but the French Cesars just ended and Timbuktu won best movie and best director (French money so French movie, yes), along with 5 other Cesars (script, sound, cinematography, music, editing).

Also Mommy won best foreign movie as expected.

Kristen Stewart is best supporting actress for Assayas' Sils Maria. It so happens that she is actually the lead in the movie, but Binoche cannot run for less than Best Actress...

The "César d'Honneur" is for Sean Penn this year. A very, very, very long homage paid by Marion Cotillard. Awfully embarrassing moment. Penn, bored to death, speaks half as much if even that.

One movie you should check out if it reaches the States: Les Combattants by Thomas Cailley (best actress, best directorial debut, best Young Actor). Good movie indeed.

I believe as long as it is screened in America in a festival or unionized setting it is allowed. I saw it playing at a DGA union screening in LA so it should have been eligible.

I hope you're right though, critics loved it and it really is a beautiful movie, still glad Ida was nommed though.

From what I know, Birdman was disqualified, because parts of its score used excerpts from previously recorded classical music. Whiplash was disqualified because the music wasn't written originally for the movie (edit: at least all those jazz pieces I guess?). I can understand the latter, but the Birdman exclusion is idiotic. It should win, too...

Also, from what I'm understanding, The Lego Movie may not of been nominated because it had live action shots in it. Which is still ridiculous.

Whiplash and Birdman were both disqualified from the Best Original Score category because 'drumming isn't a score' apparently.

I agree. I also agree with what CubaZed said, Mommy was certainly a strong contender.

One of the saddest exclusions is the fact that Life Itself didn't get nominated for Best Documentary 🙁 Apart from the fact that it's a great documentary, it's the dude who lived a breathed movies for his entire life. Bit disappointing, even with this surprisingly strong year for documentaries.
