It was pretty close, but 1980's stellar single selection puts it over for me. 1980 it is.

Album for album, the 1980 set is better. The River > Paranoid. Los Angeles > Curtis, The Cramps album > The Neil Young album, and so on. Now the 1970 singles are better than the 1980 ones, but I'm weighting the match in favor of the albums. Given 3 or 4 hours of music per year, I enjoyed the 1980 set more than the 1970 set.

Voted 1970, that album lineup is crazy, and the singles are the icing on the cake. The 1980 team if great though, every team so far in this tournament is incredibly solid.

After the Gold Rush and Curtis are both chart worthy or close, and Paranoid is of course great too. Never could stand Bridge Over Troubled Water but Lola makes up for that. On the other hand, Los Angeles is one of my favorite punk albums and that Wipers album turned out to be pretty good, but I've never been a fan of Springsteen or Waits (although The River was better than I expected). Gotta give it to 1970, it's got some huge albums and more variety than the more punk-based 1980

Obv, 1980 is the best year ever and was my pony last go-around, so perhaps I am a bit biased. I think 1980 might have underestimated it's opponent this match album-wise, but I like all those albums and some I deeply love. The singles are all ace too...

... but Im kind of leaning towards the 1970 team, for that fucking amazing (if yes predictable) album slate even if the singles team is not as consistent. Maybe some re-listening is in order.

I figured 1980 would be a tough matchup (which it is, especially those singles, yours win over mine 100x out of 100 without a doubt) so I went with some big ones.

But 1970 is a great year, there's still a lot more I have to choose from. We'll see if this strategy backfires on me though. It might.

Think Rocky may have have heavily loaded his first set of 5 LPs just to get some points on the board, perhaps as he thought he'd have to go up against Closer in this match-up. Je pense that Le Norm is saving that for later...

Yeah, great team Rocky. Wonder what you'll be putting up in your other games though.

Voting for 80 of course, though. While my stack of albums can't quite match Rocky's propositions, I don't like "Bridge Over Troubled Water" one bit, and am not too crazy on Bitches Brew. Plus I'm voting for a team I love every record in and I think is more cohesive and stylistically personal than an obvious cast of vote-grabbers that's basically the 'top 5 albums of 1970' of any given music site.

Exactly. I love The Wipers, The Cramps & X (as well as Tom Waits), but at least four of Rocky's albums are outright close-to-God masterpieces.

edit: Norman Bates' singles in particular kick ass!

Based strictly off these submissions I will have to say 1970. But I think Rocky went to his stars right off the bak whereas Norman was more thinking "okay, let's not give the most amazing iconic albums now let's save those for later." Also it's just based off taste and while I adore X's debut and that Cramps album, I'd put ATGR over most anything and Paranoid is also pretty godly.

I quite enjoy the 1970 choices and most of them are seminal in their own right (so I'm not sure how much better the teams will gets for that year), but the 1980 team has some of my favorite punk releases on it as well as quite a few other good ones.

Both years are excellent, though I'm currently leaning a little more towards 1970. It's hard to match up to Black Sabbath's Paranoid, and the selection of singles for that year is utterly terrific.
