'71 is a lot better in my opinion. The Leonard Cohen album is fantastic, and the single choices are all great, too. The 1981 picks are mostly so-so representatives of punk and its derivatives of the time. None of the albums for that year really stands out to me aside from Brian Eno and David Byrne.

Except for Television Personalities and Radio Free Europe, I couldn't get into any of the 1981 picks. Too much punk, not enough of the other stuff that made 1981 a great year. Two words: Styx Paradise.

On the other hand, most of the 1971 picks were awesome. Could have done without the Mahavishnu Orchestra but as a group

Wait a minute. Styx Paradise is kind of an oxymoron. I mean Styx is a River in Greek Hell, and Paradise is Greek Heaven. I just realized that.

Anyway, vote to Team Maggot Brain.

Didn't really like Deceit at all and I think that Television Personalities album is just OK, but My Life in the Bush of Ghosts blew me away. I'm also a fan of the singles on the '81 team, especially REM and Flipper. '71 has Songs of Love and Hate but I've never been able to like Maggot Brain and can't stand King Crimson or Can. '81 for me

This Heat and King Crimson cancel each other out with albums I dislike. Then I don't really care what the 5th song and albums of 1971 are, could even be Aqualung for that matters, best Leonard Cohen + best Parliament album + one of the only sorta jazz albums I really like + Spoon + Theme from Shaft + Sweet Leaf completely obliterates the opposition.
1981 is often considered one of the weakest years ever though so still good showing there.

Hmm. I love the style of the 81 team, maybe a couple misses but it definitely has some great unexpected picks and Television Personalities <3 and the single team is lovely all-around. 1971 has by far my favorite thing across both teams (Maggot Brain) but otherwise there's a definite my-heart-isn't-really-in-it vibe, especially considering there's only four albums and singles :?, and nothing beyond that mentioned album really floats my boat, so I think 1981 gets this vote, easily.

I love jazz fusion, and that period is probably my favourite Miles period (love On The Corner and Jack Johnson), but something about Bitches Brew just doesn't do it for me in the same way as the albums that came out around the same time. And Mahavishnu are just a little too proggy for me, and lacking that sense of fun that makes the Weather Report's early albums such a breeze to listen to by comparison.

Yeah, but 'Spoon' was originally intended as a standalone single that was only added to Ege Bamyasi because of a lack of other suitable material (and possibly to appease the record label, given that 'Spoon' was the biggest hit Can had). It seems that some people believe it was released in November 1971, and others in December 1971, but it was almost certainly a 1971 release.

'Spoon' was released as a single in Germany in 1971 from what I can tell. The first pressing of it in the states was 1972.

So, it's eligible. Doesn't change my vote though.

Discogs and RYM both say it's 1971, and I think they're marginally more trustworthy sources than Wikipedia, given that they're largely populated and updated by rabid music geeks.
