Nah, the Melvins may have eventually transcended the genre, bit it's impossible to discuss the early years of grunge without mentioning the Melvins. Gluey Porch Treatments & Ozma are grunge classics as are even their mid-period stuff such as Houdini and Stoner Witch.

anyways, I agree with Paladisiac. There's no question that grunge had it's own sound like most genres. Alice In Chains went so far as to dramatically change their sound from their debut Facelift - which was extremely interesting alternative metal in its own right- to Dirt. And despite being considered posers at the time because of it, AIC created one of the defining albums of the scene with Dirt. I kind of think it as the Pyromania of the grunge scene. Sure it's polished as hell and has obvious commercial aspirations, but , damn, if every song just doesn't suck you in all the same.

And yes, loud, scuzzy guitar rock with balls will return at some point. We're probably not that far away as Space pointed out.

A good example of an artist/band like this is Tideland. That would make a cool "grunge revival."

Not spectacular albums, but good enough. They've got the idea I'm looking for. "Early Fish Gets the Worm" is pretty awesome.

Like in the year 2100 perhaps they will have another go at what is around today.

Grunge music seems at odds with the trend towards more electronic-dominated music, so if there is ever a second wave it'll be interesting seeing how it's pulled off and how those bands would bring something new to the table. Also grunge has directly inspired a lot of alternative rock & pop since the early 90s, many of which are seen in a negative light. A grunge revival would need grunge and post-grunge to be dead in everybody's eyes. I haven't seen much from Dave Grohl in a while so maybe the time is ripe.

If you ask me, I don't see it happening or taking off the ground if it does. Grunge is already a revival of zeppelin-era hard rock. If I were to take on this endeavor, I would listen to early grunge almost exclusively - Melvins, Green River, U-Men - and build upon that as if it were 1988, but using the technology, production, and additional musical influences we have available today. My goal would be to "take grunge where it should have gone", down a route that would not ultimately lead to post-grunge.
