After reading the descriptions, I guessed I am a #4 or #5, maybe #6.

Then I made a test, which contained 9X15 questions, and the result is that I'm an #4, with both #5 and #6 being runner ups.

The two times I've taken the test, I've gotten 2 and 6. Both fit me equally depending on my current situation. I'm usually a 2 around friends or people that I trust, and I'm more of a 6 around people I'm just meeting/ don't know well.

Tested even spread (10.7, 10, 10) for 6, 4, and 3 respectively, with 4w3 and 3w4 being a balanced top two results when wings were incorporated. I guess I vibe most with 4, personally. It also seems to be the strongest corollary of INFP, my pseudo-scientific outlook of choice and something I really actively can identify with in virtually every area of life (especially when the complexities of things like shadow functions are integrated into the system).
Yeah the difficulty is to look past the typical "symptoms" of each type to see the underlying emotional processes. I initially identified as a five but then realized that the way I process emotions is completely nine-ish, and that when I look at my behaviours I can see how they're all motivated by the drives of the nine type. For example, I sometimes like to provoke petty conflicts, and that seems to go against my type, but when I reflect on it I recognize that my behaviour is driven by wanting to get rid of tension by turning things into a joke when they get too serious, trying to demonstrate that the problem isn't really that big of a deal.

Also obviously this is all pseudoscientific nonsense, but I find it to be a useful shorthand for identifying harmful behaviours and envisioning the best version of myself.

(Also I identify as a nine with a one-wing.)

The artistry of Fours is usually much more personal and self-revealing than that of Nines. The art of Nines often expresses idealized, mythological, and archetypal worlds–usually the real world glossed into something fantastic and wondrous. By contrast, the art of Fours is generally more personal and realistic, the expression of the Four's (and of everyone's) deep longing for love, wholeness, and meaning.

The principal reason these types may be confused is that they are both withdrawn types. Fours withdraw from others so that they can protect themselves and give themselves time to deal with their emotions. Nines, on the other hand, are withdrawn in the sense that they remove their attention from people or situations that threaten them, disengaging themselves emotionally so that they will not be anxious or upset. They cut off their identification with others, identifying instead with a private idealized version of reality. Average to unhealthy Nines tune out any unpleasantness by dissociating from whatever upsets them, whereas Fours do just the opposite, brooding over their anxieties in an attempt to come to terms with them. Fours are certainly not detached from their emotions–just the reverse, they are keenly aware of them, perhaps too much so.
Both types can therefore be shy, absent-minded, confused, and detached from the real world.

Funny enough, the way I normally do things in regards to artistry and withdrawal is somewhere in between the two I'd say. For instance, in most of the songs I write the lyrics comes from a sort of stream-of-consciousness place, very in tune with the emotions and feelings I have, but I never really write about myself per say. It's normally these vague constructs that in some way contain an aspect of my emotions or represent something I find interesting. As for withdrawing, I normally tend to isolate myself from people emotionally, yet inwardly brood or become anxious over my issues. I don't often follow a line of escapism, but when I become especially introverted I tend to become apathetic towards everything outside of me.

The whole Enneagram thing is more interesting than the Myers-Briggs test as a whole, though it seems a bit more vague and undefined in some ways. Maybe it's just more complex. Either way, I take them with plenty of grains of salt but they're fun to learn about at the same time.

Still see a lot of aspects of 5 but I understand more why you see me as a 6 and feel a little less 4 to myself. I'd never heard of this til last night, so I can't say a gut reaction was gonna be the most accurate, but that makes sense.

Well according to the Enneagram theory, no one is a pure personality type: everyone is a mixture of their basic type and one of the two types adjacent to it on the circumference of the Enneagram. The type you identify with adjacent to your basic type is called your wing.

Interestingly since both four and six are adjacent to type five, so it makes sense that you'd identify with a lot of five attributes. So you could easily be a 6w5 or a 4w5.

Silver wrote:

Normally test either 4 or 9 for these things if I remember correctly. I can see them both.

http://personalitycafe.com/type-4-forum-individualist/55872-difference-4-6-pattern.html

Basically sixes are very aware of how their behaviour deviates from that of others, whereas fours feel like they are inherently different and and unfixable. Sixes either react to this in a phobic way (conformity/deference) or a counter-phobic way (independence/non-compliance), and often spend their lives oscillating between these two habits, overcorrecting their behaviour and swinging to the other extreme. The life of a six is a struggle to find personal integrity.

One of the most important mistakes Fours make is to equate themselves with their feelings. The fallacy is that to understand themselves they must understand their feelings, particularly their negative ones, before acting. Fours do not see that the self is not the same as its feelings or that the presence of negative feelings does not preclude the presence of good in themselves.

Huh, alright, well that makes more sense. Still see a lot of aspects of 5 but I understand more why you see me as a 6 and feel a little less 4 to myself. I'd never heard of this til last night, so I can't say a gut reaction was gonna be the most accurate, but that makes sense.
