There is so little here that I like on either team, that it essentially boils down to She's So Unusual + Soul Mining + 'It's Like That' vs. Come on Die Young + The Hot Rock + 'Simon Says'. Going with 1983 on the basis that I prefer those two albums (especially Soul Mining, which could quite easily be in my Top 100 [if it isn't already]) to any album on the '99 team, but 'Simon Says' is my favourite thing on either team. Also, even though I really have no time whatsoever for ZZ Top or Motley Crue, there's nothing quite as offensive as Dream Theater or Anathema on that 1983 team.

I think it's really cool that you guys went against the grain, though, even if it resulted in two of the worst teams (by my own rubric, obviously) that I've seen in this tournament. Sorry.

Excellent sets from both teams. 1999 had Metropolis II, Judgment, and the surprisingly delightful Banaconda. With Sleater-Kinney, these four albums distilled the best sounds of 1999. I also listened to the Mogwai one.

But 1983's She's So Unusual, Texas Flood, Eliminator and The The, plus the singles, prove that the music of 1983 was better than 1999. Shout at the Devil was a Bonus.

Vote to the Unusual Team.

1999 by a narrow margin. Both have albums and singles I really have no interest in ever hearing again, but 1999 has The Hot Rock and one of Mogwai's best. That's enough to take this.

Haha!!Thanks, Infinity for taking me back. The only mesmerising album is Soul Mining, but I've had a lot of good times to Eliminator, Shout at the Devil, & She's So Unusual. I think all three have their share of filler, but they're all great mainstream 80s rock/pop & it's refreshing to see them chosen. I think 1999 has one of the strongest teams of the tourney so far (at least, stronger than both the 1995 and 1993 teams currently).

Anathema, Gustavo Cerati, and Sleater-Kinney topped off by wonderful singles. I like the 1983 team as well, but 1999 got this down.

Being repulsed by both of these teams makes me feel like a BEA drone. At least there are a few things on 1999 I haven't heard, so I'll come back.

Hmm. 99 has absolutely nothing that reaches out and grabs me, though that Cervati record is quite good and The Hot Rock is fine as well, despite being Sleater Kinney's 6th or 7th best record. The singles are okay to meh. 83 has a brilliant pick on both albums and singles: Texas Flood and It's Like That. And I secretly love at least large parts of She's So Unusual, and Soul Mining is very good though it's a bit This Is The Day and everything else. The rest of the team... well that music should've died with the 80s. Little motivates a vote for either team, but 83 might just have more I like (if more I dislike) but not really an impassioned vote either way.

Nah, I don't think they are terrible but more not in high regard amongst the forum regulars on average. I'm not mad or sad about it, more amused really since everyone is so confused how to handle this match. 🤣

It's probably still a bit early to tell where this battle is going to go, anyway, and the first few comments don't necessarily mean your team is that bad. Actually, 1999 is possibly my least favorite year for modern music, but I think your picks aren't that terrible like you seem to fear. The Dream Theatre, Anathema, Blondie, and Manic Street Preacher choices are especially solid.

Community comradeship at its finest! 😜 Yeah, I knew my round wasn't going to be popular but I didn't expect my competition to be just as negatively received all things considered. Hell, I like quite a bit of '83 myself (some exceptions) as I don't have a huge distaste for late 20th century dance-pop and I actually really dig The The as well as Stevie Ray Vaughn (especially that record). I like two of the singles as well, so I think it's not as "crap tier" as people seem to suggest it is. I wonder what obscure bits Infinity is sitting on, however.
