Really, I just feel like any music I like is something that touches any part of my, whether it's my emotions, my mind, my heart, or my soul.

Steely Dan and Mariah Carey are like sonic massages to me. I can be as overwhelmed and upset as possible, but listening to Fagen and Becker's melodiously layered musical progressions and Carey's passionate, fluttering voice does a lot to stretch my mindset out of a ditch. While Steely Dan's spontaneously referential subject matter evokes colorful imagery to feed my brain with, Mariah Carey sings vibrant life into basic phrases that resonate directly with my own difficult experiences of finding love.

Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen bring out the huge side of me that wants to be sympathetic. Both artists sing of the countless misfortunes clouding the dreams of their brethren, but also express a passionate optimism that transforms their struggle into a grand journey to conquer. Listening to these artists, I feel like nothing can really bring me down.

Artists like Kate Bush and Talking Heads provoke a sort of blissfully intrigued activity in my mind. David Byrne and Kate Bush both have eccentric, hammy vocal styles but sing about all sorts of off-kilter matters and have fun with all of them. These musical acts arouse my interest in life in general, making everything seem fun rather than stale or imposing.

Billy Joel is like a chameleon of sorts, adopting very different musical styles on every one of his albums, yet always glueing them together with colorful melodies and lyrics that run the gamete of feelings. His music makes me appreciate the complexity of being alive, without making me feel alienated or out of balance.

Mostly, my favorite music makes me feel secure with all of the many emotions that make me human. Red House Painters makes me feel comforted in my melancholy, William Onyeabor helps me see the good in humanity, Moondog makes me feel playful.

I also feel with my favorite records that I'm allowed to go fully analytical, discovering truths about the universe in the way Roger Ebert did when watching La Dolce Vita or Bonnie & Clyde. Even with something outside the canon like Brokencyde, it feels like I'm going through Apocalypse Now shot-by-shot.

My favorite music makes me realize how bad my taste is, and makes me wonder why I'm not listening to music with serious lyrics like System of a Down.

Something similar for me, yeah, like a pop star princess superhero with an abounding love for humanity. Like I can become everything that I think is wonderful and beautiful and good. Basically the same feeling that I got when I opened a fortune cookie that said "You look pretty"
