badseed wrote:

Loveless - I actually enjoy this album enough to put it in my top 100 of the 90s; but it has a very passionate fanbase that considers it the holy grail of music and I fail to see why. Despite outstanding and innovative guitar work it's so noisy I can't understand most of the lyrics. I'm sure this sounds cliché to people who are used to defending this album, but I like Slowdive and Deerhunter just fine (pardon me if those comparisons seem amateur).

For me, I didn't like the style of the music the first time I heard it two years ago. I wasn't into the noisy sound. But I played another shoegaze album months later, and learned that that's what shoegaze is about. When I was truly aware of what shoegaze really was, I learned how beautiful Loveless was.

My suggestion to you is try other shoegaze albums like Colour Trip, Nowhere, MBV, Carmelite Divine, and Souvlaki. After you're more familiar with shoegaze, go back to Loveless.

I'll take the blame for these (I know some people must be thinking I lack the intelligence to interpret certain music) and am open to enlightenment from anyone who wants to explain what's so great about the following albums and their respective bands in general. And I wouldn't call either the worst albums I've heard; I got stuck in a car full of drunk girls with a Kesha CD a couple years ago and I haven't trusted females since.

Loveless - I actually enjoy this album enough to put it in my top 100 of the 90s; but it has a very passionate fanbase that considers it the holy grail of music and I fail to see why.
Daydream Nation - Ditto every single thing I said about the above album.

Honestly I can't think of anything else off the top of my head (unless any forum regulars can explain why American Idiot is near the top 100). These are the two that sit in my collection, and once every couple months I decide to play them again; to see if I can find out what I've been missing. Aside from being solid background music for when I'm too busy doing something else to pay attention to lyrics, I haven't got the point.

Not the worst album ever or anything, but definitely the most dissapointing and my least favourite.

Glad you warned me about Ride, since I was just about to listen to their other work. I never knew that they became that awful. Such a disappointment after their two masterworks.

That's a wise decision with Weezer. I can't listen to them anymore without having flashbacks of those obscenities.

It doesn't matter if they're comparable or not, I just enjoy Flaming Lips more.

I think in terms of songwriting in itself, the bands are not all that different. It's just the way they go about portraying the neo-psychedelic sound that's different. The Flaming Lips prefer guitars, bass, the occasional synth and some amazing percussion. Animal Collective does a similar effect but with synths and harmonies (and guitars on Sung Tongs). But I would also say The Flaming Lips are a lot more pump-up in the way that they keep all the parts tight together. Animal Collective is just a little spacy-er with their instruments I suppose.

But regardless they are two of my favorite bands and I couldn't begin to choose one over the other 😜

Cool, just that's a different statement. But a valid opinion nonetheless.

Maybe not necessarily a ton of sonic similarities, but something like Merriweather Post Pavilion or Centipede Hz. seems pretty comparable to The Soft Bulletin (the former) or Embryonic (the latter) in terms of tone and vibe. Obviously they started out from two very different places, but they're both critically acclaimed bands who put an experimental spin on pop music, and both could realistically be described as neo-psychedelia. They are far more similar to each other than either of them are to, say, Grizzly Bear.

Well from a point of critical acclaim, yeah they're comparable. But in terms of sound (what Jman is reffering to) I don't see much of any basis for comparison between The Soft Bulletin and MPP. The Soft Bulletin comes from the Flaming Lips rock background, and though its a departure from that, it's still ever present. Structurally speaking, most of the songs on the album are still Pop-Rock songs. Animal Collective on the other hand, come from a background of electronic and experimental music, and also some Freak-folk. Though MPP is by far their poppiest record, most of it (other than My Girl) is still much more subdued, and sonically speaking, very unlike The Soft Bulletin. Now I realize that's a bit of an oversimplification, but in regards to Jmans comment referring to them as bands with the same sonic sound as a basis for comparison, I think it holds up.

Also Centipede Hz sounds much more similar, but that's one record and really isn't distinctive of the bands sound as a whole, ie. the consistencies that they bring from album to album.
