I've heard and loved or heard of and plan to listen to bolded, but I'll check out those others, too. Thanks for the response.

I've been listening to a bit more metal than usual lately and planning on diving in and listening to it predominately to flesh out my knowledge of some of the key movements that I find interesting during October, since it seems thematically appropriate. I've got a list for black metal and a list for death metal that I'll be working through, but it seems like the people I know who are into black metal don't know a bunch about the NWOBHM influences on first wave stuff. Graceful Inheritance by Heir Apparent

As far as traditional heavy metal is concerned to the mass public, I like to think Graceful Inheritance is an underrated gem that should be talked about a little more often. Everybody knows the great mainstream canon of Maiden-Preist-Metallica-Megadeth and so forth, but how often do they dig into the balls out riffwork that their slightly lesser known contemporaries were achieving at the same time? Perhaps not the metal album of the year with the most bite, but there’s a lot to love here if you like thundering guitar-based romps. Basically it’s really really good.

Crimson Glory by Crimson Glory

Flooring between the sounds of Fates Warning and Judas Priest, Crimson Glory came out the door of cental Florida with a dynamic identity that would set a standard in the growing progressive metal scene and along with Queensryche and Fate’s Warning created a legacy that would go on to inspire countless progressive and heavy metal bands throughout the following decades. Perhaps not their “opus” the Crimson Glory s/t was a powerful debut that is very much by my opinion a metal standard. A lot of fun but always engaging.

THE WILD WIND YES! I would say without a doubt their best since Brave New World, maybe best since Seventh Son. Like, if that was Maiden's actual last album I wouldn't have been upset because it was so good.

Yeah I'd say The Final Frontier was one of my favorites of 2010. When The Wild Wind Blows was a great closer, and The Talisman was terrific! (Not to mention the artwork was amazing as well!)

Piece of Mind is a great record too. Where Eagles Dare and Revelations are some of the most incredible songs in their catalog.

Speaking of Iron Maiden, I am actually low-key excited for their new album! Can't say I'm expecting an AOTY performance by them, but I love me some good Maiden! 😄 My only worry is the length of the project. Could end up overkilling a couple songs.

Hair Metal is just another way to say metal-influenced "Arena Rock" to me. I stand by the perspective that Bon Jovi and Europe aren't even hair metal; the latter having more in common with Boston and Foreigner than Motley Crue and Twisted Sister.

I guess my 2 cents on hair metal is that 95 % of what most people call hair metal isn't good enough to make lists like these. And very quickly, back to the first list of this thread, I don't consider Van Halen's 1984 to be metal. It's hard rock, but not metal, or hair metal for that matter, though their early work was almost a blueprint for what was to come with hair metal.

One thing you could say about Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet is that it has a lot of hits and "classics" on it, but again I'm just not into that whole scene.

It's the album where they started playing with some metal soundscapes and moving away from punk for a short while; I wouldn't be against including it but I personally wouldn't. It's far more metal than fuckin' Europe and Bon Jovi.

As a huge Iron Maiden fan, I think their 80's catalog (at least with Bruce) is almost flawless. But Somewhere in Time is probably my least favorite of 80's Maiden. I think Master of Puppets could be the best metal album of all time. Regardless, 1986 was a great year for metal and music overall.

I totally felt the same way when Somewhere In Time came out, but it really has grown on me as I've softened into old age. LOL. Agree that it's nowhere near as great as Master of Puppets which is essential if just not as killer as Ride or Kill Them All.

I think maybe the opposite happened with me hahaha. I had all the Maiden stuff and was obsessed with everything and it wasn't until I took a bit of a break from Maiden that I was able to look back and "properly assess" the catalog.

I think it's a good album but compared to the juggernaut that is Powerslave, or a classic like Number of the Beast, or maybe my personal favorite, Seventh Son, it isn't top tier in my opinion.
