I knew you'd be a fan! Yeah, definitely listen to more Basho. His early stuff is quite great too. Some is instrumental and some features those wild vocals. And I definitely agree about the comparison to Buckley's style, although Basho's vocals are a bit less restrained.

You're doing yourself a great disservice if you don't check out the Basho album. You're one of the members here that I think it'll leave it's most profound effect. Imagine Fahey with operatic freak folk vocals.

There are just a very few albums or works that I consider so great, so absolutely perfect and near to my heart that almost any team containing them will find it hard to NOT get my vote. The Wild Hunt, Highway 61 Revisited, Kind of Blue, To Pimp A Butterfly, Spice, ... And CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD! It's miraculous to me. And it doesn't hurt that masterpieces like Miseducation of..., and Electro Shock Blues and some solid singles are also featured here.

78 is solid too, and the only thing (I believe) that I haven't heard is that Basho album. I shall check it out.

But I voted '98 cuz there's almost zero chance I ever vote against Lucinda here. I'm sorry, Mecca. Well done, windowabove !

I really like how you're judging the teams, Norman and was thinking of doing something similar this week as the teams are all closely matched.

Listened to that Cool Ruler album for the first time this morning and really dug it. Still need to listen to that Basho album but expect good things.

I like: Are You That Somebody, Too Close (didn't know that one, pretty good), Rabbit in Your Headlights

OK: The Miseducation

I haven't heard: Permutation, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road

I don't like: Sonnet

I definitely need to listen to what I don't know to decide, it's too close to call for now.

'78 by a country mile. Basho is excellent (cheers Jonny for the tip-off a while back), Isaacs is irie, my favourite Costello LP... and as for the singles, well any team with Jilted John in it deserves to wipe the floor with everything.

The '98 team does naff all for me, especially the loathsome Sonnet which I'd happily have executed if I had half the chance.

Yeah, need to check out Gregory Isaacs, but in all frankness it's going to need to be a once-in-a-blue-moon stunner to get a vote against that 98 team and Lauryn Hill. Brilliant album selection all the way around, maybe a few cheesy singles but I actually like that cheese, so it works. I really like the other four albums on that 78 team (although actually that isn't among my favorite Beefheart records ,guess Im too boring), singles team is a bit weaker than albums though but still pretty strong. But 98 is just a stunner, perhaps if not a big risk-taker.

Eh, personally I don't think it's quite on the same level as Soon Forward, The Best of Gregory Isaacs, or Extra Classic, let alone More Gregory, but Isaacs at that time was untouchable and Cool Ruler is predictably excellent.

Anyway, both excellent teams here. Leaning '98 because Lauryn Hill, which is my favourite thing here, and Lucinda, which is quite possibly my second favourite thing here, but both teams are mad consistent and some convincing relistens could sway me either way at this point (for example, both that Tobin record and that Basho record are cases of 'like not love', but I've only ever given them a fleeting chance). 1978's got the stronger singles team, even if 'Are You That Somebody?' is the best single here. Tough choice. I'll be back to make it later.
