It may be only a few months old, but Courtney Barnett's debut album is incredibly inspired lyrically. She has a beautiful knack for creating a picture with her words, mostly in storytelling fashion and usually with a great sense of humor. She has a way of making you think and presenting profound reflections with seemingly every day thoughts and situations. It's quite refreshing and just seems so genuine.

A few of my favorite selections:

There's a paper on the ground
It makes my headache quite profound
As I read it aloud
It said "the great barrier reef it ain't so great anymore
It's been raped beyond belief, the dredges treat it like a whore"
I drank til I was sinking, sank til I was thinking
That I'm thankful for this view
We either think that we're invincible or that we are invisible
Realistically we're somewhere in between
We all think that we're nobody but everybody is someone else's somebody

Put me on a pedestal and I'll only disappoint you
Tell me I'm exceptional, I promise to exploit you
Give me all your money, and I'll make some origami honey
I think you're a joke, but I don't find you very funny

Wondering what you're doing, what you're listening to
Which quarter of the moon you're viewing from your bedroom

Taxidermied kangaroos are littered on the shoulders
A possum Jackson Pollock is painted on the tar

And my favorite is the entirety of Elevator Operator, but the best part of that song is:

I come up here for perception and clarity
I like to imagine I'm playing Sim City
All the people look like ants from up here
And the wind's the only traffic you can hear"
He said "All I ever wanted to be

I've never listened to Kraftwerk but I have thought of including Beck then decided against it for similar reasons to what you're saying. The words might remind you of things and you might read brilliance into them but looked at objectively, is there the same great craft you recognise when you read Dylan or Paul Simon or Ghostface Killah? Those artists put together great lyric albums that objectively display craft and care, brilliant phrasing, clever structuring, etc.

At first listen, these lyrics sounded so simple and almost useless. My dad actually reintroduced it to me later on, stating that it was the best album he'd ever heard. He narrated each and every song, analyzing the brilliant lyrics, in which Kraftwerk manages to predict the internet. "Crime, Travel, Communication, Entertainment" summarizes the internet today quite accurately. "Business, Numbers, Money, People" continues this. Such a revolutionary concept was devised by lyricists, not actual philosophers.

The rest of the songs take on a haunting sci-fi theme, which is pretty cool as well.

I think the lyrics on ITAOTS are about as divisive as the vocals. This album is always in my top 4 btw. And Good Lord I love it.
