Like Saoirse, I prefer '98's albums but '68's singles. Voted 1998, though, largely on account of TNT.

98 edges it out on albums, more a matter of taste if anything, but just barely. 68 though def wins it out on singles. So don't know to vote for either a team that has my favorite albums but a lot of (moderate) lows in it's second tier or a team that's really strong top to bottom but isn't as personally exciting? I donno. But yes...

In retrospect, for the purposes of the tournament, we probably should have just chosen a source and treated it as official. I don't think it's a good use of anyone's time to be digging through four or five sources to try and figure out the truth of the matter. Hindsight is 20/20, though.

wait, why is Discogs considered reliable when RYM isn't? they have the same database building structure. note that I'm not saying that this should have a material consequence for this or future tournaments, just interested in the thought process.

EDIT: actually, RYM is more reliable than Discogs because it is transparent in why the changes it makes occur. Song Cyle was changed from a 1968 to 1967 release based on this scan from Van Dyke Parks's twitter (sidebar - what a fucking insane day of releases) and this article discussing it having "just been released" from December 1967.

I prefer the '98 team ever so slightly. Both astounding teams, some of the best of the tourney, and honestly if I wasn't such a Spiritualized maniac I'd probably vote '68, but I Think I'm In Love is the best song off LaG and sways me just ever so slightly to '98.

2 LPs in my top 100 in that '68 team vs. one in that '98 team, + all good albums for '68 vs. The Boy with the Arab Strap that's only half-good.

'68 is very solid top to bottom. Still was an easy vote for '98. All those albums, no duds. I feel every album in '98 is at least very good and the last 4 are varying degrees of great. "Ocean Songs" is the only album in the round in my top 100, so that helps. And those singles- I'm sorry but any singles team with top notch American Football, Modest Mouse, AND Spiritualized is a sure-fire winner. Looking at that team it is literally about as great as I have seen. Surprised it is losing.

In the earlier matches, we've been taking discogs and allmusic as more reliable than rym or wiki, so I've been using the former to verify the year (both say 68 ). It doesn't seem worth bothering Parks about, though.

Was Song Cycle not released in 67? RYM and Wikipedia say 67 but some other sources say 68. Maybe we could contact Van Dyke himself (he has a twitter). Sp4ce did a great job with his team BTW, looks like I have a hard chance of passing the first round though.
