I'm not saying they completely suck. It depends mostly on my relationship with the album and why I'm listening to it, among other things.

If there's an album I already adore, I'll gladly listen to a deluxe edition, just because I like to hear the extra tracks. If it's a first time listen, I like to hear the initial product before delving into all the extras. And yes, in some cases they are simply cash grabs. I personally like vinyl deluxe editions, because then you get the original record along with maybe another separate one or a CD that contains all the extra tracks. When it's a digital album and iTunes plays the extra tracks automatically, it sometimes disrupts the listening experience for me. Again, it depends on a lot of factors.

I kind of have to agree. If I don't delete the bonus tracks, I feel like I have to stop listening to the album once I finish the intended final track. Otherwise it just disrupts the whole feel of the album. They're fun to have, but as far as serious listening goes, I'm only going to listen to an album the way it was intended to be listened to - at least as long as it's an album I haven't heard multiple times already.

Well that's a bit extreme.

I don't mind just having them as long as they're not imposed onto the same record (like a really bad edition of Quadrophenia I was given). I'm just fine with my Deluxe Editions of "IV" and "Houses of the Holy", although I don't plan on revisiting the extras in time soon.

I like to imagine deluxe edition tracks as like an encore, but I hardly ever purchase them. But I gotta reiterate what was said earlier. If one of my favorite albums was reissued with some mega-deluxe anniversary edition thingy with a ton of bonus shit, then perhaps I would consider purchasing it. Like, 17 years down the road when Good Kid, MAAD City gets some 20th anniversary addition (assuming I'm still in love with it), I'd likely purchase it.

tacked onto original albums? very rarely worth it. afaik the only album i have with bonus tracks is Violent Femmes' s/t, and if i'm not mistaken, those two tracks were just tacked onto the CD version vs. the vinyl version, so it was still like first print.

i do sometimes like outtake compilations. for example, VU and Another View (the former moreso, but the latter has some good cuts) are very worth checking out for anyone with interest in TVU. that's mainly because they're the best takes of songs that weren't on albums as opposed to outtake versions of songs that did make it, which are obnoxious and masturbatory to release, imo.

I'm too OCD to have them on 99.9% of occasions. The only albums I can think of where I have them are Are You Experienced, The Modern Lovers and Nowhere. I must say though, Muse's first four albums each have outstanding bonus tracks, but I don't listen to any of them with their respective albums.

I've never found deluxe editions, or versions with piles of outtakes on them worth the money... or the time to be honest. The only two instances in recent memory that I can think of where a song was unjustly tacked on as a bonus track are Super Bass and Streetz Tonight... both of which were coincidentally better than all the songs on the album.

You'll notice that the majority of deluxe editions are pop albums of reissues.... which both have the same mission 🤣

Plus, they just feel ugly to me. What the hell is a bonus track. A song is a song.

I tend to find that with older records from the 60s and 70s, for example, the bonus material on the repackaged CD releases can be very hit and miss.

Over the past couple of years i've noticed the amount of albums realeased as Standard Edition and for a higher price you can get the Deluxe Version with additional songs , live tracks, demos, etc. i can see the intention of these releases, simply to get more money out of each release, but are they worth it?

Bonus tracks in general tend to suck, they dont get to get played live and get dismissed by the own bands. Every now or then you can find a track that's worth it but thiis just makes me question the band forr why they didn't include it in the album in the first place. Still in general they are terrible.

The demos and live versions I dont mind them at all. Still i think it's not worth the extra price or the time. I rather get a collectors edition if i was really really into one specific band or album.

So what do you guys think about this?
Do you tend to listen to Deluxe versions or just stick to the standar versions?
