Poll is closed but I would have voted The Smiths. They were way more consistent over their life span. All Smiths albums are great while R.E.M. has some stinkers (Out of Time... seriously?).

These are 2 of my favorite bands and both have albums in my personal Top 5, but Smiths are superior. People voting R.E.M. need to consider that you are basically comparing 4 years of work against 30 years of R.E.M. - and the poll was still a tie. The math says, Smiths win.

Both are great bands.
BUT keep in mind that R.E.M. kept going for a long long time, allowing for their quality to have ups and downs.
The Smiths only existed for 5-6 years. Everything they did was a small masterpiece (or a big one, depends on your taste). They didn't have the time to wear off...

Agreed. A great quality of R.E.M. is they make great complete albums, especially in the 90's.

I remember my older siblings listening to it as a I got older, whereas with R.E.M. I was cognizant of their music as it came out, and then could attach myself to things that came out before- couldn't do that with the Smiths. Generation Gap is probably a better way to explain it.

The Smiths without a doubt, but then again they're probably my favourite band of all time! I love REM as well, but they should have split up about 15 years earlier. Two great bands.

Interesting because I would say that about the Smiths!!! I mean I like some of their stuff, but so far it hasn't grabbed me in- might be it didn't age as well as R.E.M. and I was born in 84, so I remember it, but it more a memory than first hand experience.

It also depends on the decade. 80s R.E.M. - I only love Murmur. The rest of the 80s for R.E.M., I would rather listen to their compilation Eponymous, than all their albums. Having said that, I still like each 80s albums- couldn't say that about the Smiths. I can't even get myself to like every track on a best of for The Smiths. They aren't consistant enough for me and maybe I just don't like the singing for the Smiths (Which is laughable when you think about the singing for R.E.M., especially in the 80s.) Can't put my finger on it- but definitely R.E.M.
