The only Blu-Rays I'm seeing for Perfect Blue are different regions; a new copy of the Region 1 DVD is like $80. Tokyo Godfathers is $45 and Millennium Actress is $125. Lucky for me, I have a couple of friends who are anime nerds and between them they've got all those and a few others they're gonna let me borrow. I'll have them all watched by Monday night.

haha I'm not even really convinced myself tbh. Arguably it's an example of "drawn-on-film" animation (intertwined with a bunch of other shit). Essentially all of the coloration and distortion as well as quick flashes of artificial shapes and basically anything else that doesn't look totally natural was achieved via drawing on or otherwise modifying blank film. Some stuff made via that technique like this obviously looks more "animated" per se, but even though Dog Star Man doesn't look quite as "animated" as that (or as a bunch other Brakhage stuff) it's still composed using more or less the same techniques

IMDB, Letterboxd, written list, etc.. all work for me, just as long as the films are numbered. English titled would be convenient, but use the films given title if it's more commonly accepted. I'm not expecting to see 'The Moon' instead of 'La Luna' for instance, but I'd prefer 'Spirited Away' rather than '千と千尋の神隠し'.

Not to be a buzzkill, but you're gunna have to convince me for Dog Star Man... 🤔 I don't have the time to watch it right now (hopefully I will eventually), but it looks more-or-less like a live-action slideshow format. It doesn't have an animation tags on IMDB either 🙁

I'll reinstate this in the thread, but if you're submitted your list via letterboxd (which is understandable, it's super easy to make lists on it), please use the optional numbering system. It helps me keep track when tallying the lists.

Due to the hype, I'll start the thread tomorrow. It's really cool to see how excited everyone is for the list this time around 😄

The opening of Paprika is one of my favourites in any movie ever. The scene transitions are just so beautifully unique. Definitely check him out.

Yeah, I noticed King Kong in my research too, but yeah that's gotta be chalked up as a special effect, similar to Jurassic Park. It made a few lists primarily because of its influence and innovation on the genre. I watched Cat City last night. I've got a rough 100, but I really am interested in trying to see the films of Satoshi Kon as he seems to be very well regarded.

We should probably come to some sort of consensus on what's the best Chuck Jones' short film as well (swear to god if someone picks Speedy Gonzales fuck you that's not even a Jones short).

I vote for either Duck Amuck, One Froggy Evening or Rabbit of Seville.

Aight, I'm going to say no to both Team America and Rabbits. Perhaps anything with live-action puppets will be cut...

This will all have to be settled when the thread is up 😐 I was worried this would happen. I might have to implement a 2 votes minimum rule. Not that anything with only 1 vote has ever made the final lists, but it would imply that people accept it as an animated film.

I've seen it listed as animation, but it's definitely people with masks, so I'm not sure why it gets listed as animation

Very true about the Muppets. I guess the difference between the two is the sets. the Muppets are filmed in the "real world" while Team America required sets to be constructed.
