Which reminds me: Both genres play into each other more than either side's defenders would like to admit, so don't go acting like the two are incompatible. Any fan of At The Drive-In knows this well enough.

As for the actually question, well its hard to say, I love both genres. My head says prog and my heart says punk 😁 Kinda like the music I guess

Prog for me. Although I think there is a difference between the 'genre' of prog and music that is actually progressive. I'm not really a punk fan. More of a 'heady' listener I guess.

This match up makes a lot of sense as punk is the exact opposite of prog.

Frankly, I really don't like prog. To me it's self-indulgent, overly intellectual, and the very definition of pretentious. I'm a "Don't bore us, get to the chorus" kind of person at least when it comes to rock and pop, so punk, of course.

On a side note, Mooseboy referred to Pink Floyd as prog rock. I disagree. I wouldn't call Pink Floyd a prog rock band, more like art rock. I can listen to a lot of Floyd's music and not be annoyed. Yes or Emerson, Lake and Palmer on the other hand, not so much.

Prog man myself. I guess the argument could be summed up in Style vs. Substance, or Form vs. Content. Always been more interested in content, being a bit of a stuffy shirt faggot. I don't like to dance and I don't like to get crunked or anything like that. Give me an interesting composition any day over some drunken lout screaming his balls off. Though ideally you combine the two. You need balance obviously. The Sex Pistols are maybe a little too dumb, while King Crimson is perhaps a little too faggy.

punk by far: Wire, Gang of Four, Public Image Ltd., Joy Division (post-punk acts), the Clash, the Sex Pistols (at least for their aesthetic, if not their music), Iggy and the Stooges, Nirvana, Television, Blondie, Ramones... these are the big names that are either punk or heavily punk-influenced, and there's at least a few in there that nobody can deny their awesomeness. I'd guess I'll go with punk, don't get me wrong, I love prog rock (pink floyd is my favorite band of all time, styx are ok i guess) but punk just seems to be more....fun. Most prog music i listen to get's really boring after a little bit. Punk is always jump around crazy fun stuff. Plus there are a lot of local punk bands so maybe that adds to a little bit of my love for punk.

Yes, I know, but they opened the way for a lot of annoying eighties stuff.

Of course, I don't believe this 100% anymore. I still prefer a lean album over an overblown one. But I still don't understand why people like the second half of the seventies so much better than the first.

I'm a big Punk fan, and i think that Punk music was a critical turning point in music (thanks to the Ramones !). it was as much important as the pop touch of the Beatles in the 60s or the alternative/indie touch of the Velvet Underground. you cant' listen to Marquee Moon and still compose music in the same way.

btw Applerill, the Sex Pistols was a 70s band.

80s style punk fun? eh? seventies stuff thats actually good? well that would be punk for me. Just like my videogames i like songs short and sweet not RPGs that drag on and on coz thats how I feel about prog.
