This list seems like a relatively decent starting point, certainly some of the films I started my 'serious' watching with anyway, Goodfellas and The Big Lebowski (or quite a number of other Coen films), stuff like that springs to mind, but there's no real proper way to approach it really.

Well, it's difficult to choose just 10 but I would start with:
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Fight Club (1999)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
Trainspotting (1996)
Boyhood (2014)
The Godfather (1972)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Into The Wild (2007)
La vita è bella (1997)

Okay well I have decided to first familiarize myself with "popular" contemporary directors, one at a time. I saw Wes Anderson's name frequently on the 2000-on charts so I went ahead and watched Grand Budapest Hotel today.

O.K., so when it comes to movies, I am one of the most "under-watched" people I know. I seriously haven't seen anything (outside of a handful of the classics.)

So this question goes out to all the serious movie buffs out there. If you could recommend 10 movies to a person who is about out of touch with cinema as one can be in the 21st century, to act as a f intro to good movies, what would they be?
