If we could talk exceptional songs by bands that aren't brought to mind much, The Cascades' Rhythym of the Falling Rain is one of my favorite underrated tunes of the decade (not then, I mean now - how many people know of it?)

Kinks underrated? Please, they were still making hits in the early 80s - Ray Davies was THE MAN. And the Moody Blues were still a big name when I was a kid...don't know about these days I suppose.

The Kinks, absolutely.

And yes, if I should pick an album then it would be Odessey and Oracle. Criminally underrated, it wasn't even famous at that time. The Zombies were generally overlooked.

The Incredible String Band is also a good example, their first two albums were brilliant, there wouldn't be the debut album by Zeppelin without their 1968 LP Hangman's Beautiful Daughter.

I'd mention The Pretty Things' S.F. Sorrow too. An incredibly good album. It was recorded at the same time with Piper and Pepper at the Abbey Road studios, and it was the first rock opera, which inspired Tommy.

There is also a girl group (I don't really care about girl groups generally) The Cake which existed between 1966 and 1968. They were the first girl - teenager girls aged 16-18!! - group who wrote most of their own songs, were famous for their beautiful acapella singing and who were also famous for splitting with the typical spectoresque girls group style. They were unique and G. Harrison also said that they could have been the next big hit if they didn't break up.

Couldn't agree more, I don't think the Stones or The Beatles ever made an album as consistent as Odessey and Oracle

I'm not sure if it would count but I think The Beatles pre rubber soul work is always overlooked, they were a pretty good pop rock band and even if they stopped there they would, in my opinion, still be one of the best 60's bands.

Mickey Dolenz did some pretty cool vocals in the 60's. He's a lot more talented than people give him credit for.

I can't post a video with Davy Jones in it because I've been told 100 times how much I look like him and it gives me the creeps. But he doesn't do lead vocals on Steppin Stone. Micky Dolenze does.

Don't look back is on Nuggets. Pretty good song indeed and the only one I've ever heard by the band.

Nuggets, by the way, is a great buy for anyone interested in lesser known 60's bands.

Anyway, the Sonics and The Misunderstood were other underrated 60s bands, as were HP Lovecraft featuring Ken Nordine. Not forgetting Country Joe and the Fish, the street musicians Gto's, the Shaggs, David Peel and Wild Man Fischer? - the latter two of whom appeared to have been airbrushed from history.

That was a good song. I had never heard that one before. The first thing that jumped out at me was, this was a hard rocking band. Especially for that time period.

They were heavy. There's no video of it anywhere, but check out "You Got A Hard Time Comin'" and "Why Do I Cry". Always liked this band a lot.

I will check those 2 also. It's strange because I do know a fair amount about the Beatles but I've never heard the Remains before. I'm picturing the Beatles coming on after the Remains do their gig and get on stage singing I Want to Hold Your Hand and Love Me Do.
