As time progresses, the meme humor bugs me more and more. I'm slowly shifting my Fantano views from favorable to neutral. Still will probably use him to listen to albums I wouldn't think of hearing, though.

I love how a thread about the insights and merits of a particular youtube music critic can be turned into a discussion about the pros and cons of a communist economic model.

Anyways yeah I really have little opinion either way about Fantano. His reviews are fine but no more or less insightful than most other critics out there, fine to browse but holds little interest. But yeah those attempts at ultra-meta meme humor are cringeworthy, though, and can be a turn-off. Overall, just kinda meeeeehhhhhhhh.

yeah, i think we do, too, so i won't keep jerking each other off in public as we begin to agree more clearly (though pm me for a good time :wink:). there were some good Jacobin articles about this last December, one as i remember attacking Foucault and the other defending and maybe some extras. they're this and this and this. didn't re-read to see which is which right at this moment because i'm at work. there's also this paper talking about Foucault's own appropriation of Black Panther writings for his own purposes, if you find that ethical discussion interesting.

i'm not arguing that postmodernists prop up US propaganda directly, and they often critique it obviously, but i think going along with US policy of flattening the Soviet Union into "dictatorship" and never trying to unravel the reality of the system is a huge flaw. i think you're strawmanning me with the idealization bit. i think it's telling that any positive words about the USSR are "idealization," and i think it plays into my point.

my overall point here though is that Deleuzian notions of capital flows and Foucaultian perspectives on power (two examples; i could spend hours discussing Zizek, but i trust you're more intelligent than to read his garbage) can be weaponized for capitalist ends, and i think a big part of this lies in their inability or refusal to indulge contemporary ideology to any extent. the complication of American narratives is never wielded for actual positive change because it is more important to prove more nuance than Bourdieu or Adorno or whatever than it is to actually accurately call a spade a spade with regards to bourgeois power. i think this is reflected in the fact that Nick Land can be a fascist and still be following Deleuze closely. this isn't an intrinsic flaw in their writings, just like Nietzsche's misuse by Germans isn't an intrinsic flaw in his. but they are flaws to a degree that aren't addressed by their followers for fear of playing into ideology or some nonsense.

also i've stated explicitly that i'm not an ML multiple times. i just think that an ML analysis of history is a more liberatory framework to start out from, and we need to critique and create nuance there instead of rejecting the whole thing for the weird agency-driven models of postmodernists who would rather discuss the tricks slaves played on their masters than the overarching political economy of the Antebellum South.

- itsit never rendered the US as an inherently "good" system, and neither did anyone else (straw)
- the cnn and the nyt are giant propagandists, this is flagrantly obvious and i dont think we disagree on this
- we can acknowledge the successes of the soviet union, but idealization is dangerous. ML is not a miracle solution to all of our problems.
