I discover new music through whatever I happen to be exposed to. What I hate is when I don't finally get into it until it is too late to tell the singer that I love them. 😢 😢 😢
I have a question about the Quietus.

Metacritic assign critic scores to the reviews that the Quietus write, yet when I go directly to that review on the Quietus, I see no review score.

For example, Metacritic tells me that

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

Slave Ambient by The War On Drugs

got a 90 score (http://www.metacritic.com/music/slave-ambient/the-war-on-drugs/critic-reviews?dist=positi ve) , yet I see no such score on the actual review (http://thequietus.com/articles/06805-the-war-on-drugs-slave-ambient-review).

Is there a review score on all of their reviews that I have been missing all this time or does someone at Metacritic just make up a score that the Quietus supposedly gives?

Location counts for a lot. If you are living in a small town, or a city that for whatever reason doesn't have much going on for live music, it's not really a valid option for discovering live music. But we have some members in Austin, right? Isn't that supposed to be the greatest live music city in the world?

Austin has SXSW, several large festivals geared towards different genres of music (from pop at ACL to psych at Levitation to Soul and R&B at Urban Fest and there really seems to be a festival at Auditorium Shores or Zilker every month or so), and literally hundreds of venues putting on shows every day of the week (in fact, most shows I've gone to this past year have been on a Monday or Wednesday rather than your typical Friday or Saturday). We're drowning in performers, and I could go out and listen to someone new each day but, outside of festivals (not including SXSW, which is largely composed of up and coming acts) and some nationally known names each month, the majority of performers are local and of relatively shit quality, don't have an album and won't last long enough to produce one. Covers here are cheap, but going out frequently is still a financial burden, particularly when you're gambling so much on the bill's quality that you might have just paid a cover to drink at an expensive bar. So no, I don't find a significant amount of music that I'm interested in via the live setting. I've found one local avant-garde guitarist (Robert Millis), one two-month-old group that looks promising but not stable (Cross Record), and then Xylouris White, which isn't local but opened for GY!BE during their show here. Local acts have little moments of genius here and there of course, but I'm not sure if I'd ever just sit down and listen to it. One exception to this is the Epistrophy Arts series in town, which is dedicated to bringing in improvisational acts through town, including the likes of Peter Brotzmann, Fred Frith, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, James "Blood" Ulmer & The Thing, etc., which I go to every show they put on whenever I can, but the problem is that I usually already know the performer and enjoy them, simply because they bring in so few shows per year. Austin is great for music and musicians, but just like the internet, once you oversaturate it with music, it's just more shit to wade through to stuff you enjoy.

The #1 method that I use to find music new to me during these past few months is the credits sections on musican profiles on allmusic. By now I have a pretty solid web of musicians that I know put out music that I enjoy, and I just wade through their projects and collaborations until I find other musicians I like via them, and I grow that way. It's brought to light just how much intertwining there is in music (and I'm not just talking my Chicago-Louisville obsession).

Money is definitely the reason I'm going to fewer shows than I used to. From 2008-2010 I was going to at LEAST 8 shows a month...often more. Nowadays, it's 2-3 tops. Usually it's one major show and one or two local DIY/underground shows. Big time arena concerts are pretty much completely out of the question for the time being.

It's a question of how much money I can put in live music these days, which is: absolutely none. Once the rent, the loan and the taxes have been paid, I can feed both my kid and me and... pay for an Internet subscription. No extra money for live music. Welcome to the real world.

Actually, Ljubljana is far from having a "thriving, consistent music scene", but I think I would definitely consider live shows to be at least one of the sources for new music for me - far from the main one, but still. Basically, it's extremely rare that one of my already existing favourites will visit Ljubljana, but there are a lot of concerts by bands that are less known (or just ones that I haven't given any time yet), names that I've heard or read about here and there. So I check them out before they come here, mostly because of the desire to see some live shows, and this led me to some pretty cool discoveries. For the more obvious examples, I'm a fan of Xiu Xiu and Liars for this reason.

But even more so, it's the local bands that I discover through live shows. For example there's a club that has free live shows from lesser known Slovenian bands each month. Also, these bands usually open for the more well known names. Not all of them are good, but it's good to see what's happening a bit more underground.
New Orleans ranks up there, too, ostensibly, but I'm not connected enough to go to any of the bounce stuff going on, and the jazz scene here is a lot of spacey fusion stuff that I dislike, plus tons of white guy funk bands that are really not to my taste. Sprinkle on a college rock scene making music 25 years after it was last interesting, and I'm up the creek. It's possible for your taste to just not match up to the place you are, even if it has lots to offer in some senses.

Yea I definitely didn't use live music as a significant source of recommendations untill I moved to NYC. But even now that i'm a bit busier, I find myself going to less smaller shows, but I still make it a good deal. Last semester I saw at least one DIY show every weekend, so that makes up for it.

I still like to buy music magazines to find out about new music...many of which will come with a free CD. I just find music websites like Pitchfork / Drowned in Sound hard work... I don't need to read small essays on every album and I find that magazines which have limited space cut the crap so to speak.

I get a lot from BEA and each week I set myself a target of listening to 7 new albums (2 current releases and I choose a focus year each week where I pick 5 more albums from whatever year I've picked)

I'm also a member of a couple of vinyl Facebook pages and I often see albums on there that interest me.

My single largest source is the Metacritic new release list.

Apart from albums that are universally hated or albums from bands/genres I know I don't like, I just work my way through that list. I don't listen to all of every single album though. What I do is listen to the first track in its entirety. I should be able to get a sense of what a band is about from the lead track. In the case of a hip-hop record, I often jump straight to the second cut. If the first track grabs me, I will listen to the first 30 seconds of the remaining tracks.

Note that this does not require that the songs are necessarily my taste. I try to be somewhat objective and focus on "compelling" rather than "good." If I hear enough interesting things, I grab the album (subscription-based downloads, in case you're curious). Info goes into a spreadsheet, while the album goes into my library, flagged for a full listen. Each album that hits the spreadsheet earns at least one full play-through, start to finish, no skipping. It gets one fair listen. These are the ones I rate on BEA and, if they make the cut, add to charts.

Some of it I get through BEA, some of it I get through RYM, and other times I stumble across new music on Spotify either by the new releases or discover sections. Also, word-of-mouth is a pretty important source too.
