WHO THE FUCK CARES indeed, MrFrogger, FroggerEsq, if I can call you that, for you are clearly a learned man. i am still at the beginning of my journey, but i already feel this sentiment rising from my chest like the sound of my soul being unshackled - first a whisper, then a roar - WHO THE FUCK CARES

WHO THE FUCK CARES about albums not formed fully in the minds of geniuses, as perfect syntheses of popular trends and artistic ambition for the consumption and appreciation of all?
WHO THE FUCK CARES about assessing albums based on anti-democratic, non-aggregated metrics?
WHO THE FUCK CARES about venturing into the postmodern, nihilistic void of subjectivity when sales figures (up to but not including the years after the Great Collapse of Album Civilization in the early '90s, when the great prophets Pearl Jam were betrayed by the masses and the evil Ticket Master) exist to validate TRUE artistic credibility and influence?
WHO THE FUCK CARES about rap, or as i like to call it, a genre derived from African American folk tradition in reaction to sustained structural oppression in the Reagan-era '80s that i owe respect but only occasional listening time... but only if it's twenty-five years old and has a saxophone in there somehere?

these are the questions we should be asking, and i am not afraid to ask them anymore.

Oh wait, sorry, I got the two threads mixed up. I thought the Romanelli thing was a continuation of Satie's new disdain for adding meaningless music to the database.

Also, wait: if the "Best Ever Albums" are holy and infallible, then what's the cutting-off point on the overall chart in terms of making one "best ever"? Is it like a factorial sort of superiority an album has from each one before it?

i would not seek the blaspheme the Church of BEA by offering my amateurish neophyte readings of the sacred texts. like all good converts, i am merely in a step of self-denial, eschewing all attempts at "clarifying a position" and "differing in viewpoint" in exchange for the kinds of wit and wisdom happily spake from the mouths of gods and their prophets.
i, too, was once lost, but now i am found. you and Charlie have to come to the light, too. can't you see? consideration of politics in popular music is nothing but wasted time never to be regained. it is also off-putting to attracting new converts to the Masonic Order of Best Albums Ever Made On This Planet And The Internet. listening to musicians that aren't on the charts can only be done to broadcast eclecticism, but it is dangerous to chart such things, for earthly temptations abound in the works of heretics. without tonality, where would we be? we would be in a very bad place indeed. a very pretentious one, if you ask me.

what we have with titles is better, but i do kinda miss having easy-to-see hierarchies of members so we could oppress the novices

first off: who misses gary and naples? a lot of people apparently, this website's activity peaked around right before they were banned. is it possible that bea's confrontational nature and drama was what was actually drawing people to the site, as opposed to the then-over-curated threads. and what do you guys make of these dips in the site's traffic on specific months?

Alexa's stats are not at all reliable (their stats are not measured directly but just based on a sample of people who have installed their toolbar). The site activity since those people were banned hasn't suffered, if anything it has improved in terms of the quality of discussion (it's now more centred on music). In terms of volume, the forums have been quieter the past few months but in the run up to the end of year, activity generally increases as people seek out end of year lists etc.

sp4cetiger wrote:

I dunno, I've been on several forums where users kept insisting everything was fine until the post rates dwindled to nothingness. Maybe they were fine with that too, I dunno.

Forums do die, and falling post rates are as good an indicator as you'll find. That's not to say that change is bad; in fact, I'd say it's necessary to keep things fresh. However, inactivity and ambivalence are seldom good harbingers for the future. I hope the diaries succeed in bringing back some life to BEA in the short term, but ultimately, the BEA forums are tied to the fate of the main site. If albummaster unveils that big update he's been talking about, I bet that we'll see a revival of interest in the forums...

The update is something I've been working on throughout the year, and I'm hoping to finish this as soon as I can because I'm extremely aware that the site needs a big overhaul. However, my day job has been very hectic this year which has meant that I've had far less free time available than in previous years to work on BEA and the site update is an extremely large piece of work. I'm still committed to finishing it, it's just taking a lot longer than it should.
