I'm not against adding this type of feature at some point, but it's not high priority at the moment. If I can squeeze it in, and there is support for it, it will get done at some point.

I think if it was added, it would stand alone a little bit, so it doesn't detract from the rest of the site. I wouldn't want it to take too much conversation away from the forums, and chat rooms do tend to attract spammers and bots, so there will be an overhead in making sure the feature is not abused.

Chat are not something most of us save. Who wants to keep them in their own thread on BEA? Not me; just a stream of rambling thougts on who knows what topic.

I think with chat option there would be less comments on people's charts, O/T comments on certain threads, less PMing too I guess. You decide if that's good or bad. Personally I wouldn't mind it.

Hmm, I think outlaw's suggestion of a Lounge thread is better. We don't really need a facebook style chat function, I think.

For some reason, I'm thinking this is a bad idea 😕

I know sites with chat, as we all do, and I find it just seems to attract trolls and it makes the site look a bit dirgy. It can also scare away new members....I'd probably use it, but I'm not saying it's a great idea.

I also don't think this site really needs it, the forums work fairly well, and we have a PM system...

But, albumaster's call.

I think people would post what they want everyone to know in the forums still (e.g. favorite albums, opinions on artists, etc), but it would be convenient for users that are close to instantly engage in sharing love for music, sharing suggestions, etc. I think it would clean up the charts and forums of small back-and-forth conversations. That being said, it would also provide the possibility of verbal abuse that couldn't be monitored at all, unlike the charts and forums; I think the complaint system in place now would still be adequate though.

I tend to agree. if we added it, it would have to be done carefully (and not for a little while anyway as there's quite a few other changes waiting to be completed already).

Wouldn't that kill conversations in the forum ? People would spend more time chatting online than sharing views in the music threads, I'm afraid.

I was thinking: what about having a chat function on BEA, where users can chat with other users currently on the site? I know we've got messages and the forums, but this would be a more instant way of communicating with other members. Just a thought
