I don't think it's "instead of just quality", but rather a means to differentiate between albums where the quality of them isn't obviously distinguishable.

In which case, sure go ahead and chart an album(s) that will give it more variety. For example, if you're choosing your #100 album and it's between an artist you've already represented vs. one you haven't, pick the one you haven't. At least that's what I would do. But what benpaco and I are agreeing on, is that your chart should not be about impressing us with your range and variety if it means lying to yourself and the BEA community.

With other favorite charts it often seems like it's focusing in on one or two particular styles that they seem to specialize in: with Cellar gloomy post-punk and dreamy shoe-gaze, JoD classic and modern techno (and if we had single charts probably a lot of gay disco classics), Purple glitchy, sad and otherwise thematically ambiguous modern electronic music and post-rock, SuedeSwede and the sadly longgone (or is she?) Mancsoulsister have a lot of love for Twee, Necharsian great for all for different types of metal as well as other types of challenging, ambient- esque? music (ONLY THE GREATEST), alel for #lol50sloveatit'smostsupreme, Brandon for music that makes you feel like a sparkling princess in an exotic land, Squishy for that kind of music you beatbox to while riding a pegasus during target practice (his aim is only a little bit better), Tap for jsut really fucking mind-blowing shit that I want to hear more, Meccalecca less for a particular, singular style of music but instead a list of works that all seem to tap very cogently into a sense of adult frustration, and fuck false modesty I obviously provide for the sad-bastard/sad-lasses cry-in-my-deep-dark-corner singer/songwriter music, and I guess a venue for favorite gay-icon pop divas.

So I donno I guess that's the beauty of BEA, in that looking for particular recs or just some great music in general, there's always a very personal touch to the albums you discover/are reccomended to.

this is a brilliant analysis.

It doesn't matter, and shouldn't. What matters when you make your list isn't range/variety for its own sake, but being true to yourself.

not calling out anyone in particular but I don't get why it's so hard to accept the fact that 99.9% of the time someone's telling the truth about their taste and they're not actually going this far to create a ruse to appear cool or knowledgeable or whatever. likelihood is it's their sincere taste. doesn't matter if it's mostly experimental/obscure releases or all canon, the person in question is probably telling the truth and just because it's the former doesn't mean it's insincere or an attempt to appear niche, as much as you wouldn't automatically presume the latter is an attempt to fit in or blend with acclaimed albums. and so what if you think they're lying? why should you feel obliged to call them out on such a small suspicion? it's pretty insensitive tbh

(and i am aware charlie's been caught with his "pants down" before rating unreleased music before but it's not as if he wasn't called out when it was noted originally so there's no need to dwell on it)

tl;dr: can't we all just get along and not question the sincerity of people's tastes

I don't know, it can be very frustrating to have your sincerity doubted. I know my overall has had comments that expressed skepticism towards my sincerity, and it seemed like I only got the benefit of the doubt because I included some familiar canon type albums. So i wouldn't be surprised to find out a chart that lacked this would receive negative feedback. Which sucks, because it suppresses valuable perspectives.

Oh well I guess to actually answer the question, Skinny, Divides and Norman always have been the most impressive for their range, and you can definitely see how the various styles seem to (at least ostensibly) reflect the wide scope of their musical taste and possibly their personality: with Skinny you get music that's very lively, impetuous and often with a sense of gonna-start-something social call-to-arms, Divides music that is very cereberal, experimental and challenging to as-of-yet uninitiated listeners, and Norman's music that is very worldy, atmospheric with a heavily melancholic undertow.

Once again it's time for a mass BEA spanking

Anyways your chart is your chart and whatever you want to do with it is completely up to you. I can see why some people may thumb their nose at a 1 album per artist chart, thinking it's just a way to show off how cool and varied a user is, but also one can argue that often when you're trying to whittle down a massive list of favorite albums to a neat 100 often second or third favorites from particular artists are more likely to get to the ax compared to some other favorite artist that one may think needs more recognition. I can also see the argument both for and against charts that tend to be more focused on wider discographies of a smaller group of artists: one may think it's more authentically about their favorite albums and they just happen to have a lot of near-and-dear favorites from one band/artist, while others argue that the chart tends to get rather boring quickly and become a redundant eyesore as it goes along, or showing a more limited listening reportoire or clingy attachment to old favorites and a lack of adventure- so on and so forth. Given before custom charts a lot of overall's could be focused on a particular genre or theme, so there was that.

I donno, I think someone's always going to judge the "validity" or "authenticity" or how impressively wide-ranging your taste is, but it's not their chart, it's yours, so they can have their opinion but it never really should affect how you wanna present your most favorite of god-bless-them-always albums. And given it is really tough to somehow think a single list of 100 albums is going to really be a definitive and all-points-covered showcase of all your favorite music out there, so I think it just really works as a convenient short-hand but it's best to really dig deeper- see their other charts and what they actually have to say about their favorite albums/music, and that gives a more substantive peek into each user's musical taste.

Yep. Not sure what the disagreement is here exactly, I'm not defending these people at all. What I mean is that the people that made those vore comments did it because they didn't like the guy in general, not because of the fact he was into vore. If CellarDoor mentioned a vore fetish, I don't think it's likely that the same comments would have been made. The comparison here is the possibility that comments about Satie's "musical sincerity" are a byproduct of people's feelings about his personality in general. (I haven't seen the comments so I have no idea how relevant this is.)

Well yeah, I'm also genuine except for the times I've lied. Specificity would help I guess.

Charlie's bizarre prescriptive mental projections on to the music he listens to or imagines listening to seem to give him some kind of pleasure, existential fulfilment and security. While that's not how I appreciate music, to each his own.

Maybe the solution is to take comments more personally? Just spitballing here. (I'm kidding. Don't do that.)

No, Sweden quit because he was attacked (and insulted) for mentioning a fetish that he may or may not should have mentioned to the forum community.
Except for the times he's lied, right?

Woah woah woah, I leave for a couple days and shit hits the fan?

Satie, my comment had literally nothing to do with you. It's was just a joking comment on the thread itself. I actually agree with your original post. But holy fuck, did you take this thread somewhere else. Yes, you are paranoid, you took a comment that had nothing to do with you and took it to mean that it (and other user's posts) are attacks at you. Also, you're "shitlist" post? What the fuck dude, even you have to see how uncalled for and rude that shit is.

Edit: Also thanks Benp and Anti (Did you change your name?) for the kind words. Though I wouldn't rely on my overall that much for recs, as it hasn't been updated in ages, all I've kept up with are my 2 custom charts. Anti, if you ever want more personalized recs you can always PM me 😄 (PS I've enjoyed reading your log, it's always fun to see people discovering music that you've loved for awhile)
