I feel that he is a great musician, in the RHCP and his solo stuff, in The Chilies he proved that he was, and is one of the greatest guitarists ever.. And his solo stuff, I feel is just amazing

I'm glad David Bowie was finally said. He really inspired a whole genre of music. A weird merger of Pop and Rock that Fleetwood Mac didn't quite achieve. Heroes is truly one of the best albums in an album sense.
Also, he's not on my list but I feel the need to give an honorable mention to Eric Clapton, a virtuoso of the bend.

Anyway, my list in a loose order.

1: Pink Floyd
2: The Brian Jonestown Massacre
3: The Beatles (Only their later stuff)
4: Chopin and Schumann
5: John Frusciante
6: David Bowie
7: Led Zeppelin
8: King Crimson
9: Radio Head
10: The Velvet Underground

Just wanted to say something about John Frusciante. Everyone would know him as the former guitarist of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, but his solo stuff is amazing. His second album, Smile From The Streets You Hold (which is no longer for sale :() (Luckily, I have an old copy :D) is a bit hard to really like at first, probably because of the ridiculous drug inspiration. Most people would connect with Shadows Collide with People orThe Empyrean better. He really is a master guitarist, the Eric Clapton of this time. It's like mixing Slash, David Gilmour and Jimmy Page.

His lyrics are pretty terrible though.

1. The Beatles - No other band has been able to push out such a vast body of amazing songs, become THE band that everything is compared to, and stood the test of time to remain right up there 40 years after their last album was released, not on merit of nostalgia but because the records are still as enjoyable.

2. The Rolling Stones - The essential rockers, while not as experimental or profound as their contemporaries at the #1 spot, these boys rocked it up for years and years and will continue to do so until their 100th album is released on Mick Jaggers' 146th birthday. Then they will die.

3. Bob Dylan - The greatest rock poet of all time. All it takes to become the rock n' roll Jesus is a guitar, a harmonica, a less-than-great voice, and those words of his, although he did get better when he plugged in.

4. Bruce Springsteen - The number one icon of mainstream rock n' roll, but it is in his early and (comparatively) largely forgotten works that his genius really came out.

5. AC/DC - If anyone could rock hard back in the 70s, these guys were it. Screw deeper meaning, this is pure good time rock n' roll bliss.

Others worth a mention:

6. ZZ Top, 7. Green Day, 8. George Thorogood, 9. Brad Paisley, 10. Iron Maiden, 11. Queen, 12. Toby Keith, 13. Van Halen, 14. David Bowie, 15. John Mellencamp, 16. KISS, 17. Santana, 18. Guns N' Roses, 19. Led Zeppelin, 20. Aerosmith, 21. Creedence Clearwater Revival, 22. Willie Nelson, 23. J.J. Cale, 24. The Allman Brothers Band, 25. Bob Seger, 26. The Clash, 27. Kris Kristofferson, 28. The Who, 29. Def Leppard, 30. Lynyrd Skynyrd, 31. Tom Waits, 32. Dierks Bentley, 33. Eric Clapton, 34. Waylon Jennings, 35. Steve Earle, 36. Stevie Ray Vaughan, 37. Bon Jovi, 38. Johnny Cash, 39. Prince, 40. Tim McGraw, 41. Elton John, 42. Metallica, 43. The Pogues, 44. Ted Nugent, 45. Brooks & Dunn, 46. Deep Purple, 47. Guy Clark, 48. Tom Petty, 49. Bob Dylan While many have tried to become the best song writer of all time, it very clear this spot is taken by taken by Bob Dylan, It's Alright Mama, I'm Only Bleeding, Like a Rolling Stone, Tangled Up in Blue, Highway 61 Revisited, and Visions of Johanna (Just to name a few) are some of the best written songs of all time. He is not only a pioneer in the music field, but one the best artists currently. Love and Theft, Together Through Life, Time Out of Mind, and Modern Times are among his best work.

Sex Pistols Few bands accomplish as much in a career as they did in one album. If the Clash represented the analytical half of the punk brain, than the Sex Pistols represented the erotic, wild side. this is not to say that they lacked nuance in their lyrics, it is just that while the Clash made their point clear as a bell with tracks like London Calling and White Riot, Johnny Rotten hid his so well that many thought of his songs as just pure anarchistic hate. However, tracks like Bodies, Holidays in the Sun, and the brilliant, tongue-in-cheek Anarchy in the U.K. prove otherwise. If one band were to be assigned the most definitive punk group in history, it would be them(Although they probably wouldn't accept it).

The Beatles If it weren't for the Beatles, the album format we know and love today would likely not exist. Every barrier set up before them was broken. If they didn't push the limits of the studio with Sgt. Pepper's, would Radiohead have pushed them even further with In Rainbows, Kid A, or their masterpiece OK Computer? Probably not. What if they had never come to America? Half of the great American artists would have never picked up instruments. Would the Clash have made London Calling if the Beatles hadn't done the White Album? Most likely not. The list can keep going, The Beatles are the greatest and most influential band to ever exist.

Nirvana While purists will swear off Smells Like Teen Spirit as "Pixies Tribute Mediocrity", There are few songs that caused music to do a complete 180 the way it did. Music was stuck in a giant rut of 80's hair nonsense, and then with one F A# G# C# chord progression everything changed. Many say other grunge pioneers are far superior but none of them had the same pop sensibility of Kurt Cobain, in songs like About a Girl and On a Plain, he practically channels John Lennon. However, their finest moments were their last. Unplugged in New York remains one of the saddest and most cathartic albums in history, and the demo of Do Re Mi is true testament to what could have been. No band will ever leave a bigger mark on the face of music in such short time.

Eminem Sometimes real genius takes time to appreciate. Marshall Mathers is one of the hardest artists to like and one the easiest love. His most brilliant cuts transcend rap music, and hit you in a different spot, the heart. When Marshall realizes that Stan is already dead, you feel just as shocked as he does, and when he strives for success in Lose Yourself you want to push him toward it. His humorous cuts are witty and provocative, and make you think twice about what you should or shouldn't laugh about. If he reminds of any other artist, it is the Sex Pistols, he hides his true feelings in the nuance of vulgarity, and pushes the limits of free speech just to piss off those who deserve to be pissed off. That being said, I think those who think punk is dead haven't been looking in the right place, for Slim Shady has been channeling it for the last decade
